RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the City Council:
1. Make appointments to fill three vacancies on the Planning Commission; and
2. Make appointments to fill three vacancies on the Parks and Recreation
Commission; and
3. Make appointments to fill five vacancies on the Senior Commission.
BACKGROUND:
The Planning Commission consists of five appointed positions which serve staggered
four-year terms. The appointed terms of Commissioner Dickson, Commissioner
Fitzpatrick, and Commissioner Mathews expire February 1, 2015. Staff received twenty-
one applications (attached) for the three vacancies on the Planning Commission.
Commissioner Fitzpatrick did not apply. The term for the three newly appointed
Commissioners will be February 2015 through February 2019. The Planning Commission
meets twice per month.
The Parks and Recreation Commission consists of five appointed positions which serve
staggered four-year terms. The appointed terms of Commissioner Abernathy,
Commissioner deArakal, and Commissioner Graham expire February 1, 2015. Staff
received seventeen applications (attached) for the three vacancies on the Parks and
Recreation Commission. Commissioner Abernathy did not apply. The term for three
newly appointed commissioners will be February 2015 through February 2019. The
Parks and Recreation Commission meets once per month.

The Senior Commission is a newly established commission that will serve as an advisory
body to the City Council in matters related to the operation of the Costa Mesa Senior
Center. It consists of five appointed positions, three of which will serve four-year terms,
and two that will initially serve two-year terms. Beginning in February 2017, the two year
terms will become four-year terms. Staff received twenty applications (attached) for the
five vacancies on the Senior Commission. The term for three newly appointed
commissioners will be February 2015 through February 2019 and the term for two newly
appointed commissioners will be February 2015 through February 2017. The Senior
Commission will meet once every other month.
Planning commissioners and Parks and Recreation commissioners must be registered
voters in the City. Staff has confirmed that all applicants are registered voters in the City.
ANALYSIS:
A total of fifty-eight applicants have submitted applications for appointment to the
Commissions in response to the City's press releases that were sent on December 11tH
December 12th, December 29th, and January 7th. The following lists the applicants for
the Planning Commission, Parks and Recreation Commission and Senior Commission.

APPOINTMENT PROCESS:
1. The City Clerk announces the time and place for appointment of commissioners and
reads the names of all applicants into the record.
2. The Mayor opens the floor for public comments.
3. Following public comments, members of the City Council may provide comments on
applicants, qualifications and related matters.
4. Council members draw numbers to determine order of nominations.
5. The first Council member in order nominates his or her preferred applicant. The
nomination must receive a second to be voted upon. Upon receiving a second to
the nomination, the Mayor calls for the vote. In the event a nomination does not
receive a second, the right to nominate moves to the next Council member in order
of the draw.
6. The process of nominations and seconds continues until commission vacancies are
filled.
ALTERNATIVES CONSIDERED:
None.
FISCAL REVIEW:
Planning Commissioners receive $400.00 monthly for an annual allocation of $4,800 per
commissioner; Parks and Recreation Commissioners receive $100.00 monthly for an
annual allocation of $1,200 per commissioner; and Senior Commissioners will receive
$100.00 per meeting for an annual allocation of $600 per commissioner.
LEGAL REVIEW:
No legal review is required for this item.
CONCLUSION:
Staff has provided this report identifying the applicants who wish to serve on the Planning
Commission, Parks and Recreation Commission, and Senior Commission and
summarizing the Commission appointment process. At this time, City Council is
requested to make appointments the City's Planning Commission, Parks and Recreation
Commission, and Senior Commission.

My wife and I have been residents of Costa Mesa for over fifteen years and grew up in neighboring
Newport Beach. We chose this community to raise our kids in because we believe it provides a safe
and comfortable environment for our family and will provide our kids with the educational and
extracurricular opportunities that they need to succeed.
My relevant experience includes over twelve years as a practicing attorney, with experience in
construction -related law, landlord -tenant law, contract, property and business disputes. For the past
several years, I have had the honor of serving as an OC Parks Commissioner for the Second
Supervisorial District.
I want to serve on the Planning Commission in order to give back to my community and have an
opportunity to make a positive impact on the future of this City. I believe that my experience as an OC
Parks Commissioner and as a practicing attorney will assist me in carrying out the responsibilities of
Planning Commissioner. I believe that l am an open and fair minded individual who is able to analyze
the facts, applicable rules and regulations presented and make reasoned judgments based thereon.

As with most builtout cities in Southern California, Costa Mesa faces the challenge of achieving
financial sustainability that can only come through the continued expansion and modernization of its
property tax base and sales tax generators. These are achieved through the adoption of sustainable
development strategies that embrace new commerciallretail development with the addition to and/or
renewal of the city's housing stock while maintaining appropriate sensitivities to the environment and
our quality life. I view my potential role on the planning commission as one that facilitates community
dialogue and consensus on the development and renewal of the city, implements and monitors the
city's general plan and various urban plans in line with that consensus, and ensures that all
development projects contribute benefits material to the quality of life for all Costa Mesans,
Professionally, 1 have been involved in the land development industry for nearly 30 years as a
community relations, marketing and government affairs consultant. Specifically, as Senior Director of
Community Communications for The Irvine Company, I assisted the entitlement team on the Northern
Sphere and East of Orange Master Plans. I provided community and media relations for the
entitlement of the Rosedale Master Planned Community in Azusa. Currently, I direct the
communications and government affairs efforts for the pending Montebello Hills Specific Plan. I am
fully versed in the law and processes of CEOA.
With respect to community service, I have had the privilege to serve on the Costa Mesa Parks and
Recreation Commission for six years; from 2003 to 2007, and from 2012 to present. I have been
fortunate to serve as that body's Chairman for three of my six years on the commission.

a Costa Mesa homeowner, husband, and father, I have a passion for our city and would love to be
in of its direction.
My experience includes a 9 year public policy background with positions at the LA County Board of
Supervisors, and with 2 members of Congress. Under my current position, as Deputy District Director
for Congressman Dana Rohrabacher, I've had the opportunity to work with Costa Mesa city staff and
the Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce. Combined with my Juris Doctorate from Whittier Law School
I possess an understanding of the law neccessary to serve in this capacity.
I am also an active member at Christ Lutheran Church Costa Mesa where I currently serve on the
Board of Education for Christ Lutheran School.
As a member of the Costa Mesa street team on homelessness I've developed an intimate knowledge
of the needs of this city. Working with local volunteer groups and residents has given me the skills
needed to best serve this community.
I know there will be many qualified candidates for these positions and I don't pretend to be superior to
any of them. Given my age (29) and unique publicy policy experience, however, please consider my
application as an important perspective in the city decision making process.

My previous 6 years on the Planning Commission (2 as Vice -Chair) were a great time of community Service for me. I would like to

I currently serve as the Planning Commission Vice Chair and am seeking reappointment to the
Planning Commission in order to continue working on the initiatives and goals established by the City
Council.
I have been a proud resident of Costa Mesa for 20 years, and a homeowner on the Westside. My wife
and I plan to raise our children here. Costa Mesa's future is my family's future, and the nature,
success and quality of the improvement of our community is critical to that future. My service on the
Planning Commission, career and professional experience have provided invaluable insight into how
Planning Commission actions help protect what makes Costa Mesa a dynamic and unique city while
improving the quality of life for Costa Mesa residents and businesses. I have lived in the
Newport -Mesa area since 1979, and have lived and worked in Costa Mesa for over twenty of those
years. I know and love this community, and am cognizant of its many strengths as well as the areas
where there is work to be done. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to continue the work we
have undertaken and work with the City Council and community on implementing Costa Mesa's

I am a long-term resident, attorney, father of two young children, homeowner, and an avid user of the
City's parks and trails. My family and I love the City of Costa Mesa. I want to use my time and talent
to help improve the City.
As an attorney, I have extensive experience interpreting and navigating statutes, regulations, and
codes.
As a parent, I understand the needs of children in the City to have access to parks and sports fields.
As a hiker, runner, and cyclist, I appreciate the need to preserve native habitat and recreational paths.
As a former HOA President in the City, I understand the value of working with different constituencies
to find common ground and to listen to the concerns and desires of fellow residents.
As,a homeowner, I want the City to be safe, clean, and open.
There have been a lot of changes since I first moved to the City and there are likely many more in
store. As a Commissioner, I would:
1.) Ensure that all of the City's children have access to parks and sporting facilities;
2.) Protect open spaces and native habitats within the City;
3.) Promote smart development that increases access to housing while not over -burdening the City's
infrastructure;
4.) Work with the Council to resolve problems posed by improperly run group homes or motels, while
ensuring that good businesses in the City do not face unnecessary restrictions; and
5.) Conduct regular open meetings with fellow residents and members of the business community so
that everyone who is impacted has their voice heard and interests considered.
Costa Mesa is a great City. With smart development we can make it even better. Now is a great time
for the City to move past the turmoil of the last few years and make progress towards its bright future.

I wish to serve on Costa Mesa's Planning Commission as part of my civic duty. I love Costa
Mesa and respect the citizens. I will always promote the things that benefit the overall
community. I believe the current pace of development has divided our city. I am disappointed
with the perception that there is a growing disdain for the people currently involved with our
local government. I would like to help change that perception by serving on the Planning
Commission.
My experience is in listening to my neighbors; from the new ones who are starting families, as
well as long term citizens that have watched our city grow from farmland to the jewel that it is
now. I am open to listen to all sides affected by growth, and willing to do the research necessary
to make responsible decisions for the growth of Costa Mesa.
Recently, my neighborhood was deeply and negatively affected by the impact of a development.
I spoke for my neighbors that did not have the ability to come to the city themselves. Our
experience with the Planning Commissioners was not friendly. We were belittled, ridiculed, and
admonished for speaking up. Further, since we were not listened to, decisions that will forever
affect our quality of life were made on erroneous information. I strongly believe that a
patronizing attitude toward the citizens is improper for the Planning Commission. I will bring a
voice FOR the citizens, not just outside developers, to the Planning Commission.
I also bring my nearly 20 years of prior working experience in commercial property management
and development. Working for a third party fee manager gives me the experience and ability to
listen to all interested parties, and work on resolving issues between them. As a Costa Mesa
homeowner since 1998, I have the ability to understand an owner's perspective. A homeowner
with little experience in dealing with municipal matters should not be treated as less worthy than
a professional developer. I will listen to, and communicate professionally with all parties
I would find it a great honor to serve my community. I hope bring a reasonable voice to the

I am a resident of Costa Mesa and a father of four children. I have and would like to continue to serve my
community in various ways and help be a part of decisions for our city, its residents, and its infrastructure. I
would like to be apart of the process which can bring solutions to issues, plan for future needs, and work with
residents, businesses, and members of our public agencies, I feel my professional and personal experiences
would be help me be an effective commissioner to help advise and recommend to our City Council on land
use matters in our city.
I am a small business owner in the commercial construction industry in both private and public works. I have
been a board member of the American Subcontractors Association (ASA) Chapter of LA/OC/IE and ASA of
California. I was elected President of our Chapter Board of Directors and have served for four years. Two
Years ago I was elected President of the ASA of California and continue to serve in both these positions. I
preside over our board of directors monthly meetings,and I serve with our board of directors to host our
membership dinners and meetings each month. I also assist in our legislative advocacy in Sacramento.
I have also served on the Board of Directors of AYSO Region 97 for nine years. I served as Assistant
Commissioner for three years and the Region Commissioner for four years. I currently serve as well on the
Booster Club of Newport Harbor Boys Lacrosse and was elected President this past year.
During this last year I served on the Charter Committee and Fairview Park Advisory Committee. I have
studied, been prepared, and have been an active participant in committee discussions and recommendations.
I have worked with other members and members of the public to come to reasonable ideas, solutions, and
recommendations.
On these various board and committees I have shown leadership, an ability to listen first and react second,
and have worked with members and constituents from all different backgrounds and experiences. In these
cases I have worked well with others to come to reasonable solutions for disputes, planned for existing and
future needs, and have grown membership and popularity of each of these organizations.
I feel my experience, knowledge, and civic engagement would be an asset as a Planning Commissioner. My
experience on committees has given me the opportunity to be a part of planning, zoning, and recommending
balanced and clear guidelines; all of which I feel I can bring and be an effective Planning Commissioner. I
have opinions, ideas, and solutions for which I always try to back each of these up with facts, experience, and
knowledge from others such as City Staff and others whose expertise can be utilized fully.

To wRom a may concern:
Having lived in Costa Mesa for over 10 years, and having owned and operated a small business,
(Ersoylu Consulting), here for the past 6.5 years, I feel that 2015 is an opportune time for me to get
more engaged in the governance of this city I call home. I feel that I am quite familiar with the workload
required of such a voluntary position, and 1 am ready to make the commitment. 1 have spent much of
my professional career working with land use and planning professionals, ensuring equal access to
safe, engaging spaces, as I believe development and planning are critical for how residents perceive
their well-being, and can also foster ways for communities to spend time together; research shows that
this increases civic good -will, as well as physical and mental health.
Professionally, my expertise is in planning and measuring the impact of community health and social
programs. My firm provides consulting for nonprofit organizations, foundations and public agencies. In
particular to Planning, my firm was responsible for the creation of the Youth & Family Master Plan for
the City of Santa Ana (2009). My firm has had various other engagements where we have worked to
support Planning Departments through planning and impact evaluation services to help them realize
their physical infrastructure and land use visions. Currently, we are working with Planning
Departments in both Anaheim and Ontario to ensure that their residents learn to collect data through
community assessments (walk/park audit mapping & observation tools) that can be provided to city
staff identifying community needs. I have been extensively involved in community health initiatives
related to land use planning, as it impacts public perceptions and public health. I served on the Robert
Wood Johnson Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities Evaluation Advisory Committee, and have a deep
understanding- both academic and professional- of how city planning functions in a complex political
environment. I currently serve on the St. Joseph Community Partnership Fund Board, I am the past -
Chair of The Grain Project Board (a local nonprofit with extensive joint use projects) and have, in the
past, served on the Santa Ana Federal Empowerment Zone Board.
On a more personal note, I live in the Mesa Verde area and am an avid walker and biker; I walk
everywhere possible. As such, I am acutely aware of how much development and land use decision
matter. These directly impact residents' quality of life, and decision to move to this city. I am
committed to supporting the Costa Mesa Planning Department to ensure that its vision and goals are
implemented, and best serve all of the residents of this great city.
During my academic career, in addition to having taught Nonprofit Organizations, Public Policy, Urban
Politics and American Government at CSULB, Chapman and UCI, I have had the pleasure of giving
several guest lectures to the UCI Masters in Urban Planning students over the years about how to
create, implement, and measure healthy land use planning initiatives.

I would like to serve on the Planning Commission as a way to participate and give back to the
community that I have come to know and appreciate for well over 45 years. I grew up in the Newport
Mesa area, graduated from The University of California, Irvine, and raised a family of my own in Costa

I wish to serve on the Planning Commission because I believe that the choices and
recommendations of this commission have a significant effect on the the long term health and future of
our city. While I have a number of views about what I believe foster a healthy city, I have
demonstrated the ability to understand and appreciate all aspects of the issues that will come before
the Planning Commission, and will make decisions based on the long and short term benefits to our
community, even though those decisions may be difficult. Only through thoughtful analysis, coupled
with timely decision making, can the best interests of our community be achieved. I also believe that
the more information we have about any issue, betters our decisions and I think that community input
is the corner stone to the quality of our decisions. I fully understand the time committments to such a

attended and have provided my input at various City meetings, such as the Planning Commission, the
Fairview Park Citizens Advisory Committee, the Parks and Recreation Commission, and Bikeability
meetings. I have also done volunteer work for the OC Registrar of Voters, Banning Ranch
Conservancy, and the US Green Building Council.
I hold certificates in Sustainable Energy and Resource Management, and Sustainable Business
Management from UCI. Some of the applicable topics that I studied include climate change planning
(flooding, droughts), water issues (droughts), energy issues, local food production (community

I am a proud resident of Costa Mesa and I would be honored to serve my city as a Planning
Commissioner. Perhaps the simplest explanation for why I want to serve on the Planning Commission
is that I have fallen in love with this city and I want to contribute to its ongoing vitality and progress. I
believe I have much to offer in that regard, both in terms of professional expertise and my unique
personal perspective.
I am a registered professional engineer. I have an interest in efficient energy use and I have an
inherent understanding of the technical consequences of decisions and their implications on the
surrounding environment. As the owner of an energy consulting business, I have a professional
interest in staying current on construction codes, public utility programs and best practices in project
management. In October 2013, 1 was recognized by the White House for my work in clean energy.
Energy and the environment may seem only tangential to traditional city planning but I believe they are
incredibly vital to a vibrant and functioning city. There are several lawyers on the current commission,
however, I believe that a diversity of professional backgrounds would greatly benefit the Commission
and the city.
I have a deep interest in the nuances of public policy decisions and their impact on Costa Mesa. The
current debates may center on development density, sober living and marijuana but there is much
more at stake in our city. As a planning commissioner I would dig into the nitty gritty details and would
be willing to put the work into understanding the consequences of those details. I am a committed
student of public policy and a published author by the Center for National Policy on energy security
issues. This love of nuance and consequences would also be balanced by my desire to seek input
from residents on issues that come to the commission.
I am a veteran of the US Navy and a millennial. I am committed to serving my country and my
community in every way I know how. I am also part of a generation that is just at the cusp of making a
decent living, getting married, buying a house and having kids. We inherently have different priorities
and perspectives on the type of city we want to call home and I believe I can provide a voice for this
segment of our city.

As a long-time (37 year) resident of Costa Mesa, I have seen our cityscape evolve. Some of the changes
have been beneficial and unique, and others have not served the residents in the way they were intended.
It is because of the later that I became more involved in the community during the last five years. I would
like to help Costa Mesa achieve a balance between the desires of the residents and the businesses that
serve them, so that the city can grow with stability and we can maintain a vibrant and diverse city.
Many of you know me because I try to attend all planning commission and council meetings. I try to stay
informed of what project are being planned, educate myself on principals and issues of urban planning and
listen to the community's needs and desires. In addition, my employment in real estate (land development,
leasing and transactional), corporate and tax law means I have acquired not only knowledge in those areas,
but the ability to think through problems and issues, research technical issues and make decisions on an
unemotional and fair-minded basis. I also worked for a company that owned a portfolio of shopping
centers, apartment buildings and office buildings and participated in the management of its properties. My
professional development has enabled me to advance in my job to management positions. Because I work
closely with clients and know the importance of listening to their concerns, I am acutely aware of the
perception of problems by other people and how to work around issues to achieve a satisfactory result.
This ability would easily transfer to accomplishing the goals of businesses and developers in a way that the
community finds desirable.
As part of the continuing General Plan update, as a planning commissioner, I would focus on smart growth
principals that I believe would benefit Costa Mesa, such as creating walkable and bikeable neighborhoods
and widening our transportation choices; making development decisions predictable, fair and cost effective;
encouraging the collaboration between stakeholders and the community; and fostering distinctive, attractive
communities without a detrimental effect on existing residents. I would encourage new businesses that
could provide jobs, as well as services, to residents and would work with existing businesses to stay in
Costa Mesa. I would work with companies to partner with the city on the homeless problem. My
experience with and awareness of how other cities deal with similar problems would benefit our city.

Costa Mesa is an ever changing city. Balancing that change, with the unique needs and desires of various
stakeholders in the community, is an important challenge we need to meet. We need to do so with less acrimony
and a greater sensitivity to the impacts of this growth and development.
My family and I have been residents of Costa Mesa for over 30 years. During that time we have seen the city
evolve, grow and expand in both size and character. During my residence and especially during the last four
years of campaigning, I have walked all of the neighborhoods of our city. It has given me an up close and
personal understanding of the challenges and needs of the residents and the city as well as the successes and
improvements in our individual communities.
The city and its residents have a wide number of issues. These include greater traffic congestion, in -fill property
development, dilapidated buildings, the conflicting rights of property owners, evaluating solutions for affordable
housing and the homeless, the growth of new residences and new business environments, the evolution of some
business entities in residential areas and the evolution of residential areas in some commercial and industrial
areas, maintaining infrastructure and drawing the right kinds of businesses to the city.
Navigating these and other issues are increasingly important for the city and the discussion of these plans
requires a range of perspectives and points of view.
I have over 40 years experience in the development, implementation and execution of plans. My work
experience covers both the private and the public sector. As a business executive I have honed the skills
necessary to evaluate issues and concerns and help create successful outcomes.
These same skill sets are the ones necessary for the Planning Commission. The ability for Citizen Planners to
listen to the concerns and objectives of citizens and work with professionals to create appropriate decisions is
the core of this Commission's Scope of Work. I know that I have the skill set to work with this body to achieve
those objectives.
I have served as a member of the City's Charter Committee and clearly demonstrated an ability to bring diverse

Over the past two years I have witnessed the current commission make decisions and give advice to
applicants that is not necessarily in the best financial interest of the City. There is no existing appeal
process to this commission, which I believe needs to change. This commission is currently operating
independent of any real oversight, again, I believe this is dangerous to the City's bottom line.
My background in Real Estate, Insurance, and Financial Planning as well as my many years of
community involvement give me unique qualifications to serve the City well as a Parks and Recreation
Commissioner.
I have owned businesses in the City of Costa Mesa since 1978 and have lived in the city since 1977. 1
served as the Business Committee Chair for the Chamber of Commerce during the continuation of the
55 fwy and led the negotiations between the Newport Blvd. Merchants and CalTrans, culminating in
the Merchants providing lunch at the completion of the Wilson St. overpass to the CalTrans workers.
For this I was given the Chair of the Year Award from the Chamber.
I served many years on the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce, and was a member and
President of two Rotary Clubs in the city. My two grown daughters graduated from Costa Mesa High
School and attended elementary and middle school here, as well as classes at Orange Coast
College. My daughters and I have each attended many of the city's recreation programs over the
years.
As residents of this city, we are privileged to have a unique mixture of business, residential and higher
education facilities. We have renowned shopping venues and entertainment complex. Our
neighborhoods are filled with beautiful parks and lush greenery. Our recreation programs are staffed
with knowageble personel and provide a much needed service at reasonable rates to our citizens.
As a Commissioner I would consider it my fiduciary duty to make sure the City maintains the programs
that make sense to the City's bottom line and review the ones that do not with generous public input.
My high ethical standards and love of this City make me a good choice as a Parks and Recreation
Commissioner.

I am a long-term resident, attorney, father of two young children, homeowner, and an avid user of the
City's parks and trails. My family and I love the City of Costa Mesa. I want to use my time and talent
to help improve the City.
As an attorney, I have extensive experience interpreting and navigating statutes, regulations, and
codes.
As a parent, I understand the needs of children in the City to have access to parks and sports fields.
As a hiker, runner, and cyclist, I appreciate the need to preserve native habitat and recreational paths.
As a former HOA President in the City, I understand the value of working with different constituencies
to find common ground and to listen to the concerns and desires of fellow residents.
As a homeowner, I want the City to be safe, clean, and open,
There have been a lot of changes since I first moved to the City and there are likely many more in
store. As a Commissioner. I would:
1.) Ensure that all of the City's children have access to parks and sporting facilities;
2.) Protect open spaces and native habitats within the City;
3.) Promote smart development that increases access to housing while not over -burdening the City's
infrastructure;
4.) Work with the Council to resolve problems posed by improperly run group homes or motels, while
ensuring that good businesses in the City do not face unnecessary restrictions; and
5.) Conduct regular open meetings with fellow residents and members of the business community so
that everyone who is impacted has their voice heard and interests considered.
Costa Mesa is a great City. With smart development we can make it even better. Now is a great time
for the City to move past the turmoil of the last few years and make progress towards its bright future.

As a former college athlete, I am a big proponent of physical activity and sports. I think it is critical for
children to be exposed to these two things at an early age. Supporting them by offering various
activities and playing areas (playgrounds, courts and fields), makes it easier for the children to stay
with a certain activity or sport. The benefits associated with being physically active last a lifetime.
I am a former UCI collegiate tennis player (1982-'86), with a BA in Economics. I have served on the
UCI Athletic Board for 20 years. I worked in Real Estate Development for six years in the Huntington
Beach area. I worked as a Financial Advisor for Merrill Lynch in Newport Beach for eight years. I

I am a resident of Costa Mesa and am a father of 4 children. I have and would like to continue to serve my
community in various ways and help be a part of decisions to continue and improve upon its greatness. I
would like to be a part of the process which can bring solutions to issues, plan for future needs, and work with
residents and members of our public agencies. I feel my professional and personal experiences would be well
suited to help advise and recommend to our City Council on existing policies, plans, and procedures and work
with the City and residents on future plans and goals. I have both professional and personal experience with
being a part of or presiding over boards and committees.
I am a small business owner in the commercial construction industry in both private and public works. I have
been a board member of the American Subcontractors Association (ASA) Chapter of LA/OC/IE and ASA of
California. I was elected President of our Chapter Board of Directors and have served for four years. Two
years ago, I was elected President of the ASA of California and continue to serve in both of these positions. I
preside over our board of directors monthly meetings, and I serve with our board of directors to host our
membership dinners and meetings each month. I also assist in our legislative advocacy in Sacramento.
I have also served on the Board of Directors of AYSO Region 97 for nine years. I served as Assistant
Commissioner for three years and the Region Commissioner for four years. I currently serve as well on the
Booster Club of Newport Harbor Boys Lacrosse and was elected President this past year.
This past year I served on the Charter Committee and Fairview Park Advisory Committee. I have studied,
been prepared, and have been an active participant in committee discussions and recommendations. I have
worked with other members and members of public to come to reasonable ideas, solutions, and
recommendations.
On these various boards and committees I have shown leadership, an ability to listen first and react second,
and have worked with members and constituents from all different backgrounds and experiences. In these
cases I have worked well with others to come reasonable solutions for disputes, planned for existing and
future needs, and have grown membership and popularity of each of these groups. In my service to the youth
sports community I have had great experience with Costa Mesa City Staff and elected officials in working for
the improvement of all parks and facilities. I have intimate knowledge of our parks, our recreation facilities,
parkways, and master plans.

Having lived in Costa Mesa for over 10 years, and having owned and operated a small business,
(Ersoylu Consulting), here for the past 6.5 years, I feel that 2015 is an opportune time for me to get
more engaged in the governance of this city I call home. I feel that I am quite familiar with the workload
required of such a voluntary position, and 1 am ready to make the commitment. I have spent much of
my professional career ensuring equal access to safe, engaging places for recreation, as I believe
public spaces are an important place for communities to spend time together, fostering civic good -will,
as well as physical and mental health.
Professionally, my expertise is in planning and measuring the impact of community health and social
programs. My firm provides consulting for nonprofit organizations, foundations and public agencies. In
particular to Parks & Recreation, my firm was responsible for the creation of the Youth & Family
Master Plan for the City of Santa Ana (2009). My firm has had various other engagements where we
have worked to support Park & Recreation Departments through planning and impact evaluation
services for their physical activity initiatives. When serving as Civic Engagement Director at Latino
Health Access in Santa Ana (2004-2008), my role was to work extensively with the City of SA P&R
Department to secure additional park space in underserved communities, as well as negotiate with
local business owners about usage of vacant lot spaces in order to increase acreage for physical
activity. I have served on the Joint Use Statewide Taskforce (JUST), Convened by Prevention Institute
(based in Oakland, CA) and have a deep understanding- both academic and professional- of how park
systems function in a complex political environment. In addition, I have served on grant review
boards/ committees for St Joseph Community Partnership Fund, for First 5 Los Angeles and for
Orange County Nutrition & Physical Activity (NuPAC Collaborative). I currently serve on the St. Joseph
Community Partnership Fund Board, I am the past -Chair of The Grain Project Board (a local nonprofit
with extensive joint use projects) and have, in the past, served on the Santa Ana Federal
Empowerment Zone Board.
On a more personal note, I have attended mommy & me classes through the City of Costa Mesa P&R
Department and understand the role that these community services have in the residents' quality of
life, at an affordable price. I am committed to supporting the Costa Mesa P&R Department to ensure
that its vision and goals are implemented, and best serve all of the residents of this great city.
During my academic career, in addition to having taught Nonprofit Organizations, Public Policy, Urban
Politics and American Government at CSULB, Chapman and UCI, I have had the pleasure of giving
several guest lectures to the UCI Masters in Urban Planning students over the years about how to
create, implement, and measure successful community based programs.

I am presently a Commissioner on the City of Costa Mesa Parks and Recreation Commission,
just concluding a two year appointment.
During this period, I helped guide the Canary Drive Stairs Project through approval and on to a
successful conclusion. The stairs were completed and opened for public use last month.
I have acted as liaison to the Fairview Park Citizens Advisory Committee and recently gave a
presentation to the Committee to extend a multi-purpose trail along the Fairview Channel from
Placentia Ave. to Estancia High School. This resulted in the Committee adding this item to the
January, 2015 agenda for consideration.
In 2005, while Chairman of the Parks and Recreation Commission, I was successful in getting
Commission approval to replace a planned 3 foot wide dirt trail from Placentia Ave to the River Trail,
with an 8 foot wide multi-purpose trail. The funding was obtained and the trail was constructed as
part of the Fairview Park Wetlands and Riparian Habitat Project. The trail was opened 2 years ago
to high public acclaim.
I have a history of success in helping to bring positive change to our City and have
knowledge of the workings of the Commission and how it interfaces with City staff and the City
Council. In addition, I have been active in the City for many years and understand the physical
and political nuances of the City.
It would be a privilege to continue to serve the City and this Council as a Member of the Parks

I wish to serve on the Parks and Recreation Commission because I believe that the
choices and recommendations of this commission have a significant effect on the the long term health
and future of our city. While I have a number of views about what I believe foster a healthy city, I have
demonstrated the ability to understand and appreciate all aspects of the issues that will come before
the Parks and Recreation Commission, and will make decisions based on the long and short term

Although I am officially 'new' to the City of Costa Mesa, I have lived in the community in the same home for over 30 years, so have a
deep understanding of the community and the responsibilities of a commissioner. I have held volunteer leadership positions and an
elected position that makes me uniquely qualified for service on this commission.
In the 1990's I held the position of President of the Newport Harbor Baseball Association for 3 years then continued as a member of
the Executive Committee. This recreation baseball program straddles both the City of Newport Beach and the City of Costa Mesa,
hence my devotion and time was spent working with both cities' Parks and Recreation Staff as well as senior management. One of
the key challenges in youth sports is field space and allocation of those spaces combined with the neighbors concern about parking,
noise and general impact. After an initial meeting with the various sports and city leagues to define uses, times, and space it
became apparent a priority system had to be developed and implemented for the planning and 'fairness' this required. [was
instrumental in working on this "program" with both cities and the school district with an outcome of more efficient uses of fields and
better maintenance of the fields that was adopted and supported by all of the organizations involved. This included a smooth
transition when 2 new fields came 'online.'
In the late 1990's I then volunteered at Newport Harbor High School in the Schools' Foundation as well as the Baseball and Football
foundations for over 10 years. During my tenure in various roles (including president of baseball, vice president of NHHS
Foundation, and coordinator of freshman football) the need for a more organized use of resources, space and fields on behalf of all
of the sports became a priority. Once again, I volunteered to help coordinate an effort to work with Newport Beach, Costa Mesa,
NMUSD and the various sports' boards to create a more efficient use of fields, space, and maintenance. This included a new sport:
lacrosse (in its infancy, but still needed use of space).
A key to my service would be to re-create those successful models implemented on behalf of the City of Costa Mesa. With so many
organizations' (both inside and outside the city) requirements for fields seemingly in conflict, we can implement in a system that
utilizes city staff, district staff, and key leadership of recreational sports to a great outcome.
In my role as a 32 year board member of the Orange County Board of Education, my devotion to children and in particular to
children needing additional resources and assistance to ensure a better outcome as adults was honed. Much of these resources
involve organized activities that support them in ways their families cannot. Many of the after school activities run through a city's
Parks and Recreation Division are vital to these offerings as well as the organized recreation teams played on fields throughout the
city. One of my other goals is to make certain the resources these children deserve are maintained and or expanded to match their
needs. I have found if these children are engaged in these offerings then our community as a whole wins with safer streets and
better educational outcomes.
In addition, I have ample and proven experience working with volunteers, staff and budgets. These budgets included non-profit,
foundations as well as taxpayer provided budgets. In each case, each year I have overseen and guided these to be fiscally sound
and balanced while meeting the needs and mission of the organization.
Over the years serving in various volunteer and elected leadership roles, I have been asked by both cities to serve in the capacity of
Parks and Recreations Commissioner. But, alas as I worked hard to create wonderful opportunities with both cities I was actually
housed in neither. Now I am firmly annexed into the City of Costa Mesa, so I can provide my volunteer time and expertise to the
betterment of this city.

I have rented a parcel (parcel #1) at the Hamilton Community Garden since it opened several years
ago. In the time I have worked my parcel I have seen many things that need improvement to make
the gardening experience more enjoyable for the gardeners and that would provide a needed
source of fresh vegetables and fruits for the homeless in Orange County.
My background goes back to my youth. I was born in St. Joseph, Missouri and raised on a 1,300
acre farm in Gentry County up near the Iowa border. The land there is rolling hills suitable mainly for
cattle grazing with a little bottom land good for row crops of corn and soybeans. We bred purebred
Shorthorn cattle and sold our heifers and bulls for cross breeding to buyers such as the King Ranch
in Texas. Our heifers were crossed with their Santa Gertrudis bulls to upgrade the breed.
I come from a long line of progressive farmers on both sides of my family. My dad's father was born
in Kentucky in 1876, and as a thirteen -year old he drove a chuck wagon in the 1889 Oklahoma
Land Rush. He lived with the Cherokees near present-day Tulsa until moving to Missouri around
1895. He farmed along the 102 River bottoms near Savannah. My dad was the youngest of eight
and was born near Maysville. We started our Shorthorn breeding in partnerships with my
uncle --dad's oldest brother --when dad returned from service in the army after WWII.
On my mother's side my grandfather was Pennsylvania Dutch born near Greenville,Tennessee
around 1889 and moved to a small farm near New Market, Iowa in 1905. He was a founding
member of the first 4-H club. He was a pioneer in crossing single cross field corn to produce hybrid
seed corn. He was also a breeder of purebred Polled Shorthorn cattle and purebred Duroc hogs.
I graduated from high in school Albany, Missouri as Valedictorian and received a scholarship to the
University of Missouri, Columbia where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
My career included engineering positions with Shell Oil, Hunt -Wesson Foods, Sullivan Systems,
De Laval Separator, Alfa Laval, Pullman Kellogg, Brown & Root, Independent Valley Energy Co.,
and Orange County Sanitation District. I retired two years ago as a Senior Wastewater Treatment
Plant Operator after 28 years service.

The parks and recreational facilities of Costa Mesa are great assets for our city. It is extremely
important to me to maintain a variety of park experiences for our residents and to find multiple
solutions for meeting the recreational needs of the community.
My family has resided in Costa Mesa for over 30 years. Our home development is adjacent to Fairview
Park and Talbert Reserve and across the street from Balearic and Estancia Parks. As our family grew
we were involved with school athletics, AYSO and club soccer. I have always appreciated the special
gifts we have in our parks and the importance of quality open -space for our residents. I walk through
Fairview Park and Talbert with my dogs multiple times per week.
I have been actively involved as a citizen spokesperson in the Fairview Park Citizen's Advisory
committee and feel that my efforts along with others' have so far resulted in keeping Fairview Park
natural.
I understand the goals of the wide range of stakeholders in the ongoing maintenance of our parks and
the challenges we face to use them well while maintaining the quality of life for all of our residents.
The next few years in Costa Mesa are critical to the long term growth of the city vis-a-vis park use,
expansion and utilization. As an individual experienced in planning and problem solving I believe that I
can bring us together to solve the problems with new solutions while we meet the needs of our youth,
our athletic.needs, our passive enjoyment needs and our residents' needs.
We must keep our natural parks natural and we must seek new solutions, working together, to meet
the needs of the athletic community. These do not have to be mutually exclusive.

Nearly 13 years ago, my husband and I moved to Costa Mesa. Reflective of its demographics, we were
drawn to the mix of singles, young families, long time residents and seniors. Additionally, we found the city's
offerings of programs, services, educational opportunities and involvement for young and old alike the very
reasons we considered this for our home, a model community!
While 10% of the city's population is comprised of senior citizens, that statistic alone does not provide a
clear picture of the importance of senior services, issues and opportunities. Our community mirrors national
demographics where boomers care for their parents, grandparents raise grandchildren and seniors lead
productive lives and make a difference in the city.
The Costa Mesa Senior Center was established to ensure the quality of life for our seniors. Ensuring quality
programs, delivery of social and health services as well as serving as a resource to the community, the
senior center is key to a healthy community.
As you see by the attached resume, I have made a life of community service and have demonstrated
experience in the roles of commissioners and committee members.
Professionally, more than 25 years in the nonprofit sector, including executive director, grantwriter,
fundraiser, with proven leadership, decisionmaking and work with public, private community and volunteer
partnerships.

I have a passion for helping the elderly enjoy their lives to the fullest! Since I have been an advocate
for the older generation for most of my life and I have a special place in my heart for them, I feel that I
have a lot to offer. My talents and experience with seniors would allow me to be an asset to the
Commission. I am very intuitive when it comes to the needs and wants of seniors and I get personal
satisfaction of knowing I made their life a bit easier or more enjoyable.
I was an active Director on the Home Builders Council board for 12 years, chaired various committees
and received numerous awards in that industry. I also served as a member of a newly formed board
for the YMCA Community Counseling Center. I set new procedures for fundraising and held a very
successful event. I understand the commitment and dedication it takes to get things done while
serving as a Director or Advisor.
I have 13 years of experience as a volunteer for Trauma Intervention Program (www.tipnational.org)
in the Orange County Chapter where we were trained to give emotional support to trauma victims. I
am very compassionate and empathetic in general and found that work to be second -nature and
extremely rewarding.
My business experience includes founding and operating a small business for 25 years. Some of my
clients have included The Irvine Company, SCE and Monier Lifetile to name a few. My business was
built strictly on a referral -basis so I consider myself to be very blessed.
As a 2001 graduate of Leadership Tomorrow (Irvine/Costa Mesa/Newport Chapter) I was proud to be
selected to participate in the esteemed 9 month program.

At Orange Coast College I chaired many events; however, one that really impacted my life was
chairing Special Olympics, an event for kids with special needs. As chair I designated tasks, created
schedules, provided support and learning opportunities to both my committee and the kids who came
to compete. My goal was to construct a successful event where the volunteers came to understand
different people's needs, to learn that everyone counts. To see the smiles from the 350 participants
proved to me that the event was a success and made me realize that when one impacts someone's
life positively, brings happiness and compassion—skills that are rare but essential in a leader. Seeing
these physically challenged kids give their best inspired me to become more involved in student
government—so I ran for Student Senator. I had success in student government at OCC. I was
elected Senator and appointed as a District Student Council representative. In which I had the
pleasure to work on legislation, resolutions, and represented more than 30,000 students. In the
positions that I have held, it has tested my character and inspired in me the need to remain open to
diversity and lead those around me. And the lessons of these experiences have strengthened my
leadership skills due to the understanding of different cultures and human personalities. I also decided
to give back to my community by becoming a tutor at Save Our Youth. All of these experiences—
chairing the Special Olympics committee, the many student government experiences I had, and
tutoring at Save Our Youth—have taught me that leadership is not about being dominant, but being
able to walk beside those who struggle.
Now I am a college student at University of California, Irvine who is expanding his education,
knowledge, and opportunities to succeed in life. I realize now that I am responsible for people around
me and every choice I make can affect others. My daily walk through the city of Costa Mesa has been
a reminder of being a successful community leader, focusing on servitude to the people, community,
and to myself. If chosen, I will challenge myself to give the best of me and push to my limits in the
Senior Commission.

I wish to serve on Costa Mesa's Senior Commission as part of my civic duty.
My experience with Senior Citizens is personal. Although I am not yet a senior, I have
previously spent 13 years caring for my independent in-laws during their senior years. I have
helped them transition from full independence to live-in care. My own parents are very active
seniors and I have worked with them as they serve their communities. I also had the honor of
working as a personal assistant for a very active senior.
I believe that the most important quality when working with Senior Citizens is respect. I have a
deep regard for the experience and knowledge that our seniors bring to the community. I know
the importance of keeping both their minds and bodies active.
I also bring my nearly 20 years of prior working experience in commercial property management
and development. My experience with property management gives me the understanding of the
importance of properly maintaining a public facility.

Having lived in Costa Mesa for over 10 years, and having owned and operated a small business,
(Ersoylu Consulting), here for the past 6.5 years, I feel that 2015 is an opportune time for me to get
more engaged in the governance of this city I call home. I feel that I am quite familiar with the workload
required of such a voluntary position, and I am ready to make the commitment. Having lived my entire
childhood with my grandmother (many, many years ago), I feel that I am acutely aware of the issues
facing our senior population. The fact that Costa Mesa has a Senior Center is a good starting place,
but infrastructure means nothing if not properly programmed- meeting the needs of that community. I
am interested and willing to help this Commission to meet its mission.
Professionally, my expertise is in planning and measuring the impact of community health and social
programs. My firm provides consulting for nonprofit organizations, foundations and public agencies. In
particular to Planning, my firm was responsible for the creation of the Youth & Family Master Plan for
the City of Santa Ana (2009). My firm has had various other engagements where we have worked to
support various social and health programs- from youth to senior- through planning and impact
evaluation services. In particular, we ensure that data is used in a timely fashion to make the best
programmatic decisions and set the direction for agencies such as the Senior Center. Currently, we
are working on various projects where we collect data directly from program participants through focus
groups, surveys and interviews; we know how to get information from a targeted group - especially
those who have been traditionally disengaged. I have been extensively involved in community health
initiatives and have a deep understanding- both academic and professional- of how cities can support
their residents in a complex political environment. I currently serve on the St. Joseph Community
Partnership Fund Board, I am the past -Chair of The Grain Project Board (a local nonprofit with
extensive joint use projects) and have, in the past, served on the Santa Ana Federal Empowerment
Zone Board.
Although not a Senior myself, I am committed to supporting this demographic who is too often
reclusive and unaware of what services are available to them. I will work to ensure that the Senior
Center vision and goals are implemented, and best serve all of the Senior residents of this great city.
Please see my attached resume for more information on my background. Although in terms of
expertise, I feel that my topical skills best fit the P&A and Planning Commissions, I am willing to

I have been actively involved with Costa Mesa Senior Center for the past 6 years, was a City Council
appointee to the Costa Mesa Senior Center Board of Directors for 3 years, was the Board liaison to
the Senior Advisory Committee for 3 years and have attended classes and special events.
I came before the City Council to request fire drills as many seniors told me they had never had fire
drills before and were concerned for their safety in an emergency situation. Another safety issue I
brought to the City Council was the painting of all of the concrete bumpers, white, in the parking lot as
many of our seniors had tripped and fallen over them because the bumpers were not distinguishable
from the pavement. Both of these issues were expedited by the City Council to the gratitude of our
seniors.
I have had the pleasure of working with and for the seniors for the past 6 years as well as representing
the City's interests by serving on the Senior Center Board of Directors. I would like to continue serving
our senior community as a 2 year appointee to the Senior Commission.

I have been an active volunteer at the center for the last 15 months. I work the front desk every
Wednesday monrning and enjoy assisting the seniors that have choosen this beautiful facility to spend
their time at. I also facilitate the Senior Round Table every Wednesday afternoon. Listening and
directing the group in a postive direction as to enrich their daily lives.
I was a city appointed Board of Director for 6 months, trying to assist with the merging agreement
between the previous board of directors and the city. I worked hard to see that there was a positive
end with the seniors' interest at heart. And I believe that has happened.
I am retired after working 29 years with the local school distict, Newport Mesa Unified School
District. 25 of those years have been at TeWinkle, Costa Mesa High School and Corona del Mar
High. I have worked under the umbrella of the fiscal services for 14 years. While working for NMUSD
I was subjected to 23 annual audits and responded successfully when necessary. I followed and
enforsed state laws and regulations to ensure the safeguarding of all donated and student funds.
Today, being retired, I spend my days working a couple of hours a week at a local retail store. I
belong to a book club and enjoy time with my family, gardening, movies with friends and the fresh
outdoors. I hope to contribute my professional experiences and personal love for the older
generation so as to not only enrich their lives but to also enrich mine .

As a young senior resident and homeowner in the City of Costa Mesa for the past eighteen
years,) believe my education, experience and commitment to the independence and safety of the

With an undergraduate degree in Psychology and Social Behavior from the University of
California at Irvine, a Master of Social Work with a concentration in Mental Health and a
sub -concentration in Older Adults and Their Families from the University of Southern California, a
certificate in Financial Planning and Management for Nonprofit Organizations from California State
University Fullerton& Extended Education Program, and licensure in the state of California as a
Licensed Clinical Social Worker, have prepared me personally and professionally to work with and
advocate for the older adult population.
My vast experience in working with older adults has spanned positions with the Orange County
Health Care Agencies Older Adult Services (OAS) and Senior Health Outreach Prevention Programs
(SHOPP) in addition to employment with two Orange County senior centers, one operated by city
government, the other operated as a nonprofit agency.
These experiences have provided me an understanding of the dynamics these two different
business models pose as well as preparing me in the complexities of running a senior center under
either model and how the senior community may be affected.
I am currently heading the Outreach and Case Management services at a nonprofit senior
center in Orange County by providing office visits or in-home needs assessments, and linking the
senior to Federal, State, County, and nonprofit agency resources to safeguard the independence and
safety of the senior. My experience also includes recent collaboration with other beach city senior
centers and agencies in the development of a new collaborative group to ensure seniors from all cities
are receiving consistent and comprehensive services to fit their individual needs.
In addition to work experience, I was certified by the California Department of Aging as an
Ombudsman in the California Long -Term Care Ombudsman Program from January 2009 through
January 2011 with the Orange County Council on Aging. As a volunteer, my responsibility to residents
included mediating and resolving resident& concerns or problems to the satisfaction of the resident in
addition to safeguarding quality of life.
As a member of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) since 2005, 1 follow the
core values and principles of the organization and look at this opportunity to serve on the City of Costa
Mesa Senior Commission as a way to further my commitment to the senior population in the city I

I would be honored to serve on our Costa Mesa Seniors as a Commissioner. As a senior, I have been
a member of the Senior Center for about 6 years. For nearly all of the 8 years I served on the City
Council, I was the liaison to the Senior Center Corporation Board. I went to many Board meetings and
other meetings where I listened to seniors and their concerns and tried to represent the interests of the
seniors and the City to the Corporation Board.
It was always my goal to see our Costa Mesa seniors maximize the use of the Senior Center and the
many wonderful services available to them. It is evident that many seniors are very happy now that
the City is operating the Senior Center. I would like to continue to represent the interests of our
seniors and the City Council as a commissioner and reach out to more Costa Mesa residents and

There is a trend in recent years where new seniors, especially baby -boomers,
are not fully retiring, for various different reasons. Most senior centers do not
provide services for the "more active" seniors, and I believe I can help provide
some guidance in this matter
Also, as an old geezer of 69, 1 believe I can understand the needs and wants of fellow
old geezers as well as most anyone else.

My Mother, Melva Neft, was part of the original committee to create the Senior Center. Over the years I have seen the
Center functions and services deteriorate. I would like to help the City bring the Senior Center back to greatness and
become a model for other communities. The Senior Center should improve the lives of Seniors and interact in the
community with other organizations, such as religious organizations, colleges, libraries, and City recreational programs.
The Senior Center is not be a warehouse for "old" people but should be a catalyst to keep older residents healthy and
interact with the community.
My experience and qualifications include service on various boards and jobs involving finance and programming. I was in
leadership positions. I am involved with the Costa Mesa Friends of the Libraries board and our Mesa Verde Library
Bookstore.
I was an Electrical Engineer at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard and an officer in the International Federation of
Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE). I was on the Executive Steering Committee at the Shipyard.
I was Sergeant at Arms, Financial Secretary, and Professional Unit Chair of the Local and International Vice President of
the IFPTE. I was Chair of the Marine Lighting Committee of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America and
participated in writing the current Marine Lighting standard. In my Congregation I was President, Secretary, Programming
chair of the Men's Club. I was on the Board of my Congregation including Parliamentarian.
I am a Registered Electrical Engineer in California. I completed requirements at Coastline Community College to Mediate
in the California Court system.
I received two meritorious unit citations and two special act awards at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard.
I have taken various classes at Orange Coast College (OCC) over the years to enrich my mind and body.
OCC could be a source of joint programming with the Senior Center.

My name is Don Nemchock I am 64 yrs. old. My wife Linda and I have been residents of Costa Mesa
for over 25 yrs. We had the privilege of being the caregiver for my wife's mother who was in ill health in
our home for the last 5 yrs. She passed away last year at 84. We were blessed to have the opportunity
to enjoy the benefits of the Costa Mesa Senior Center.
I volunteer with the Amazing Grace Ministries which visits nursing and elderly facilities in Costa Mesa
and Orange County. We listen to residents needs and offer encouragement. I also worked part time at
Silver Streak at the Jewish Federation in Irvine. We provided rides for the elderly and disabled to
doctors and other destinations.
I would like to make a coordinated effort to supply transportation to for the elderly at facilities in Costa
Mesa and local to the Costa Mesa Senior Center to enjoy the activities and benefits. I currently provide
transportation for an elderly man at the Senior Center of Orange.
I feel at my age I can bridge the gap of the senior needs and those of my generation in the future.

I love our community and now have some free time since I retired.
I have a background in education. I worked at Estancia High School for ten years and at Orange
Coast College before that. I feel I can be productive on a city committee. I have dealt with thousands
of students, helping them prepare for college and their future.
I'm a great organizer and have a tireless work ethic.

I am applying for a seat on the newly created Senior Center Commission. Currently I serve on the
Fairview Park Advisory Committee and also served on the Charter Committee. I spent one whole year
campaigning for a seat on the city council. I attended council meetings, planning commission, park
commission, and pension committee meetings. I met people for coffee sessions and walked the city
visiting over seven thousand homes. I introduced myself, my vision and goals if elected. One of the
areas of concern that residence shared was the Senior Center. I followed through and became
acquainted with the center and realized that this is an area that I can best serve my community with
the experience that I have gained in the last two years.
Prior to electing to run for city council, I was part of a group of community leaders that met three times
a week and walked the entire city. We culminated our one year project by walking a total of 750 plus
miles. I understand the value of creating commissions, listening to residences in the community and
together merging ideas. I believe that my two years of investment, my understanding of the goals to
meet the needs of all seniors in the city will help me to contribute in building a strong Senior Center for
Costa Mesa.

My experience as a "senior" is a primary qualification for service on this commission. The first thing I
must do is become a member of the Senior Center!
My focus as a member would be to evaluate the classes offered and discover how they serve seniors;
how classes utilize the talents and knowledge of its members; how do members reach out into the
community.
I have had experience serving on boards as a working member and in a leadership position. I began
my'career as an elementary teacher. After raising a family and work as a "temp," I returned to UCI for
Human Resources Certification. I worked six years at Volt as an HR Generlist.
Currently, I am a member of our Senior Ministry at Saint Michael & All Angels' Episcopal Church. My
home has been in Costa Mesa for 19 years; I have lived in the area since 1954.

As a communications director at UC Irvine, I remain involved with promoting geriatric health research
and wellness efforts, including the nation's largest study on the lifestyle and health factors that
engender healthy aging -- the 90+ Plus study.
In the course of this work, I see first-hand how important effective and community-based senior
service can improve and extend the lives of our senior population. I believe the skills I've acquired,
coupled with my administrative and analytical abilities, will be beneficial to the Senior Commission.
Costa Mesa has a lot to offer to seniors, and I'd like to be part of the effort to make our city a shining
