The City distributes funds to Costa Mesa United. This agreement is a partnership between the city, Costa Mesa United and the NMUSD to provide funding and oversight for the improvement and enhancement to existing athletic facilities at both high schools 1/16/15 Costa Mesa United 15258 $7,000 How does the expenditure break down? What else will we have them do and are they just a "mow and blow" type of outfit? Who maintains tot lots, DG paths, volleyball courts and other amenities, keeping them free of weeds and such? Will vendor post notifications when pesticides are applied? The contract is comprehensive for some sites in that it includes all work needed for the site (fire stations, City facilities, parkways & medians) and is less so for City parks, where the Park Maintenance staff are responsible for a wide array of maintenance tasks, including but not limited to: ballfield prep., tot -lot inspection, repair and maintenance; skate park cleaning and inspection; litter and trash removal; maintenance of sand volleyball courts; all irrigation testing, repair and programming; all repairs to the parks, tot -lots, restrooms, and other site amenities. To summarize; the City staff provides most of the specialty and critical maintenance functions, with the contracted landscape maintenance service providing the turf maintenance and a large portion of the shrub and planter maintenance. This is a very cost-effective hybrid method of providing the services the City parks require. We have been doing this combination for over 15 years. As for posting when pesticides are applied: this is now a requirement by the State Department of Pesticide Regulation regardless of the material applied. In general, the only materials applied to City parks are weed control and rodent control. For the most part these are not applied by the landscape maintenance contractor and are applied by a separate contractor specializing in that field. A separate contract will come to council in the next few months for that.
