Reflective of its demographics, we were drawn to the mix of singles, young families, long time residents and seniors. Additionally, we found the city's offerings of programs, services, educational opportunities and involvement for young and old alike the very reasons we considered this for our home, a model community? While 10% of the city's population is comprised of senior citizens, that statistic alone does not provide a clear picture of the importance of senior services, issues and opportunities. Our community mirrors national demographics where boomers care for their parents, grandparents raise grandchildren and seniors lead productive lives and make a difference in the city. The Costa Mesa Senior Center was established to ensure the quality of life for our seniors. Ensuring quality programs, delivery of social and health services as well as serving as a resource to the community, the senior center is key to a healthy community. As you see by the attached resume, I have made a life of community service and have demonstrated experience in the roles of commissioners and committee members. Professionally, more than 25 years in the nonprofit sector, including executive director, grantwriter, fundraiser, with proven leadership, decisionmaking and work with public, private community and volunteer partnerships. More specifically to this Senior Commissioner position, my experience includes: Alzheimer's Association Orange County - Interfaith Committee representative and Memories in the Making trained volunteer instructor Coastline Community College - Gerontology Program Certicate and Advisory Board Member Costa Mesa Senior Center - Former Board member, volunteer and volunteer instructor As a result of the recent changes in leadership and operation of the Costa Mesa Senior Center, the role of the newly formed Commission will provide an opportunity to shape and lead the center to the forefront of the city, becoming a hub of activity and meeting the holistic needs of the seniors. I appreciate the opportunity to submit my application, be considered for this position and to serve. Thank you, Charlene M. I have attended OCC, shop at the local (businesses and routinely utilize many of the parks, schools, libraries and other community resources. I am very concerned about the future utilization of city land going forward. I am also concerned about the surrounding area projects that have impacts on the city, I have wide ranging experience in many areas that enables me to have a very well rounded, objective view of issues. I am a UCI graduate after my two years at OCC. I sat on the OCERS board for seven years which gave me experience in board rules of order, institutional investing, budgeting, auditing, human resources, IT contract issues and more. My other experience includes Eagle scout, crime analysis/forensics, leadership/supervision, outdoor enthusiast, reading, gardening, computer/internet and I try to keep on local and national current events in politics. My talents included strategic thinking and the ability to quickly identify the core issue of a problem. Please consider me for the Fairview Park committee or any other committee/commission. I would love to participate and would be a valuable asset. At Orange Coast College I chaired many events; however, one that really impacted my life was chairing Special Olympics, an event for kids with special needs. As chair I designated tasks, created schedules, provided support and learning opportunities to both my committee and the kids who came to compete. My goal was to construct a successful event where the volunteers came to understand different people's needs, to learn that everyone counts. To see the smiles from the 350 participants proved to me that the event was a success and made me realize that when one impacts someone's life positively, brings happiness and compassion—skills that are rare but essential in a leader. Seeing these physically challenged kids give their best inspired me to become more involved in student government—so I ran for Student Senator. I had success in student government at OCC. I was elected Senator and appointed as a District Student Council representative, In which I had the pleasure to work on legislation, resolutions, and represented more than 30,000 students. In the positions that I have held, it has tested my character and inspired in me the need to remain open to diversity and lead those around me. And the lessons of these experiences have strengthened my leadership skills due to the understanding of different cultures and human personalities. I also decided to give back to my community by becoming a tutor at Save Our Youth. All of these experiences— chairing the Special Olympics committee, the many student government experiences I had, and tutoring at Save Our Youth—have taught me that leadership is not about being dominant, but being able to walk beside those who struggle. Now I am a college student at University of California, Irvine who is expanding his education, knowledge, and opportunities to succeed in life. I realize now that I am responsible for people around me and every choice I make can affect others. My daily walk through the city of Costa Mesa has been a reminder of being a successful community leader, focusing on servitude to the people, community, and to myself. If chosen, 1 will challenge myself to give the best of me and push to my limits in the Senior Commission. I am interested in supporting the Costa Mesa Senior Center through service on this Commission. I have resided in Costa Mesa for over 10 years, and my business (member of Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce) is based here as well. I am committed to the well-being of all age groups residing here. Having spent my entire childhood living with my grandmother (who had a 6th or 8th grade education and spoke limited English), i learned early on how to provide insulin shots, clean bedpans and diligently clean to reduce fall -hazards. Beyond the immediate health and safety needs, I also know the role of community engagement, and a sense of purpose can help maintain the overall mental wellbeing of a person as they age. I believe that having a Senior Center is a GREAT place to start; nonetheless, having worked in the nonprofit field my entire career, i am acutely aware that infrastructure without intentional, relevant programming is meaningless. I am interested in helping the Commission meet the needs of seniors in Costa Mesa. Professionally, my expertise in planning and implementing nonprofit programs makes me a strong candidate for the position. Currently, my firm provides services to SeniorServ, one of the largest senior -serving nonprofits in Southern California. In my experience on the Housing & Public Services Grants Committee, I was also made aware of the situation facing seniors in the area. From data presented during those Committee meetings, it was fascinating to see the demographics of our senior population here. Most seniors here are not low-income (-8% are). Furthermore, nationwide, seniors are doing better -off economically than they were in the 1980s, early 1990s when the stories of elderly folks eating catfood and/or foregoing medicine to purchase food were making national headlines. A quick perusal of Forbes, Bloomberg or the Economist paints a different story of today's geriatric population. They are financially more stable, independent and interested in health and wellness well into their golden years. It is important that a Senior Center is programmed to meet their needs. Courses like: Tai Chi, investment & estate planning, retrofitting your home to avoid falls, and other more innovative classes must be offered to this more savvy population. In addition, there are unique opportunities in this community to raise funds for programming and operations through Social Enterprise and/or fee -far -service models, rather than to strictly pursue grants and individual giving. I am interested in working with the group to explore those models; I am currently a member of the Social Enterprise Alliance and have worked with several nonprofits to scale feel -far -service efforts. I would welcome the opportunity to help this center think about innovative ways to raise funds from the 92%, in order to ensure that the 8% who cannot pay are provided with great services as well. Having been at the Council meeting last month where a gentleman voiced the desire of some seniors to see Ms. Wendy Leece serve on the Commission, combined with the large number of applicants the last time this opened up, I am well aware of how competitive these two seats are. I hope you find it in the city's best interest to welcome a new perspective on the Committee, and allow me to support your efforts. As a young senior resident and homeowner in the City of Costa Mesa for the past eighteen years,l believe my education, experience and commitment to the independence and safety of the senior population would prove to be an asset to the City of Costa Mesad Senior Commission. With an undergraduate degree in Psychology and Social Behavior from the University of California at Irvine, a Master of Social Work with a concentration in Mental Health and a sub -concentration in Older Adults and Their Families from the University of Southern California, a certificate in Financial Planning and Management for Nonprofit Organizations from California State University Fullerton§ Extended Education Program, and licensure in the state of California as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, have prepared me personally and professionally to work with and advocate for the older adult population. My vast experience in working with older adults has spanned positions with the Orange County Health Care Agencies Older Adult Services (OAS) and Senior Health Outreach Prevention Programs (SHOPP) in addition to employment with two Orange County senior centers, one operated by city government, the other operated as a nonprofit agency. These experiences have provided me an understanding of the dynamics these two different business models pose as well as preparing me in the complexities of running a senior center under either model and how the senior community may be affected. I am currently heading the Outreach and Case Management services at a nonprofit senior center in Orange County by providing office visits or in-home needs assessments, and linking the senior to Federal, State, County, and nonprofit agency resources to safeguard the independence and safety of the senior. My experience also includes recent collaboration with other beach city senior centers and agencies in the development of a new collaborative group to ensure seniors from all cities are receiving consistent and comprehensive services to fit their individual needs. In addition to work experience, I was certified by the California Department of Aging as an Ombudsman in the California Long -Term Care Ombudsman Program from January 2009 through January 2011 with the Orange County Council on Aging. As a volunteer, my responsibility to residents included mediating and resolving resident§ concerns or problems to the satisfaction of the resident in addition to safeguarding quality of life. As a member of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) since 2005, 1 follow the core values and principles of the organization and look at this opportunity to serve on the City of Costa Mesa Senior Commission as a way to further my commitment to the senior population in the city I reside. As a senior, I have been a member of the Senior Center for about 6 years. For nearly all of the 8 years I served on the City Council, I was the liaison to the Senior Center Corporation Board. I went to many Board meetings and other meetings where I listened to seniors and their concerns and tried to represent the interests of the seniors and the City to the Corporation Board, It was always my goal to see our Costa Mesa seniors maximize the use of the Senior Center and the many wonderful services available to them. It is evident that many seniors are very happy now that the City is operating the Senior Center. I would like to continue to represent the interests of our seniors and the City Council as a commissioner and reach out to more Costa Mesa residents and inform them of the benefits of belonging to the Senior Center. I would also like to improve the regular classes, travel opportunities and other special programs. My Mother, Melva Neft, was part of the original committee to create the Senior Center. Over the years I have seen the Center functions and services deteriorate. I would like to help the City bring the Senior Center back to greatness and become a model for other communities. The Senior Center should improve the lives of Seniors and interact in the community with other organizations, such as religious organizations, colleges, libraries, and City recreational programs. The Senior Center is not be a warehouse for "old" people but should be a catalyst to keep older residents healthy and interact with the community. My experience and qualifications include service on various boards and jobs involving finance and programming. I was in leadership positions. I am involved with the Costa Mesa Friends of the Libraries board and our Mesa Verde Library Bookstore, I was an Electrical Engineer at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard and an officer in the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE). As a communications director at UC Irvine, I remain involved with promoting geriatric health research and wellness efforts, including the nation's largest study on the lifestyle and health factors that engender healthy aging -- the 90f Plus study. In the course of this work, I see first-hand how important effective and community-based senior service can improve and extend the lives of our senior population. 1 believe the skills I've acquired, coupled with my administrative and analytical abilities, will be beneficial to the Senior Commission, Costa Mesa has a lot to offer to seniors, and 1'd like to be part of the effort to make our city a shining example of a senior -friendly community.
