I am a fortyfive-year-plus resident of the City of Costa Mesa. I have attended OCC, shop at the local businesses and routinely utilize many of the parks, schools, libraries and other community resources. I am very concerned about the future utilization of city land going forward. I am also concerned about the surrounding area projects that have impacts on the city. I have wide ranging experience in many areas that enables me to have a very well rounded, objective view of issues. I am a UCI graduate after my two years at OCC. i sat on the OCERS board for seven lyears which gave me experience in board rules of order, institutional investing, budgeting, auditing, iihuman resources, IT contract issues and more. My other experience includes Eagle scout, crime ianalysis/foren sits, leadership/supervision, outdoor enthusiast, reading, gardening, computer/internet and I try to keep on local and national current events in politics. At Orange Coast College I chaired many events; however, one that really impacted my life was chairing Special Olympics, an event for kids with special needs. As chair I designated tasks, created schedules, provided support and learning opportunities to both my committee and the kids who came to compete. My goal was to construct a successful event where the volunteers came to understand different people's needs, to learn that everyone counts. To see the smiles from the 350 participants proved to me that the event was a success and made me realize that when one impacts someone's life positively, brings happiness and compassion ---skills that are rare but essential in a leader. Seeing these physically challenged kids give their best inspired me to become more involved in student government—so I ran for Student Senator. I had success in student government at OCC. I was elected Senator and appointed as a District Student Council representative. In which I had the pleasure to work on legislation, resolutions, and represented more than 30,000 students. In the positions that I have held, it has tested my character and inspired in me the need to remain open to diversity and lead those around me. And the lessons of these experiences have strengthened my leadership skills due to the understanding of different cultures and human personalities. I also decided to give back to my community by becoming a tutor at Save Our Youth. All of these experiences— chairing the Special Olympics committee, the many student government experiences I had, and tutoring at Save Our Youth—have taught me that leadership is not about being dominant, but being able to walk beside those who struggle. Now I am a college student at University of California, Irvine who is expanding his education, knowledge, and opportunities to succeed in life. I realize now that I am responsible for people around me and every choice I make can affect others. My daily walk through the city of Costa Mesa has been a reminder of being a successful community leader, focusing on servitude to the people, community, and to myself. I feel it is my duty to give back to the community that has given me so much. Having been a member of Save Our Youth Academic Center since the seventh grade I quickly realized how blessed I was to live in a city that helps underprivileged youth achieve their full potential. President John F. Kennedy once said, Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your countrye I believe the same applies to my city, Costa Mesa. As 1 mentioned earlier I am a political science major at UCI and I feel this would be a great learning opportunity for me to apply my major in the real world in the city 1 grew up in and love. The City of Costa Mesa's Cultural Arts Committee has been a driving force in promoting art and artists in Costa Mesa and surrounding areas. We have managed to do a lot with a very small ...to nonexistent budget. The committee's goals have been refined since its inception in 2001. In the past we have promoted established and emerging artists by displaying their work at the annual Artist's Showcases. Additionally we've enjoyed the enthusiasm of focal residents at a citywide Artwalk promoting local galleries and also hosted Art in the Bark events which showcased the work done by some of our focal non-profit organizations. Our contribution to the 00th Anniversary event was "on budget" and extremely well attended. I spent my formative years (prior to moving to Costa Mesa) playing music and performing in groups large and small. Starting in elementary school and through high school, I went on to perform in college at UCLA, having the chance to play at the Rose Bowl and in Royce Hall, both important landmarks and fabulous experiences. Since moving to our city in 2007, 1 now perform for a much smaller audience (my wife and two young children), but the enjoyment is just as great. Our city affords much opportunity to enjoy arts across a broad spectrum and all senses. It is critical for all to experience art - in their own way - as I truly believe it leads to a happy existence. And we have to make these performances and experiences well known throughout our community. I am a forty -year Costa Mesa resident and longtime City volunteer. I am currently seeking reappointment to the Cultural Arts Committee of the City of Costa Mesa. I have thoroughly enjoyed my three years with the Conunittee and am very eager to continue both our work in progress and fiiture work. In my three years with the Committee I have participated in all regular duties, in particular our annual "Arts in the Park" event for children at Estancia Park (planning/vol-unteering) and SOBECA Art Walk (planning/artist recruitmcnt/advertising); generating Committee -related reports; creating/implementing/volunteering at Committee - sponsored art shows/events; advertising events online; participating in Subcommittees. I am currently a member of two Subcommittees of the Cultural Arts Committee: Art in Public Places and Costa Mesa's Signature Art Event. Our first project for Art in Public Places consists of utilizing the work of local artists to create vinyl wraps for our unadorned utility boxes, much like projects in cities like Long Beach and San Clemente. As a subcommittee member, I take the time to drive around the city to scout locations/take pictures/create photo & written reports. The subcommittee for Costa Mesa's Signature Art Event is laying the groundwork for an annual, multi -day event to showcase "The City of the Arts." As a part of this subcommittee, I participate in meetings extracurricular to our monthly Committee meetings. In the last month we have named the event, selected our top two choices for dates with researched cross-referenced dates, have put in for a venue and are planning activities and events for all ages. An ongoing project of mine is researching/writing a book and creating a corresponding art exhibit based on two neurals painted in 1943 by an Academy Award -nominated artist stationed on the Santa Ana Army Air Base. The murals are owned by the Costa Mesa Historical Society and hang permanently in the Orange Coast College Art Center. My aim is to create the most comprehensive provenance of the murals, a comprehensive artist biography, and first artist retrospective. This will add to the scholarship of our City's rich cultural history and 1 ani working with the CM Historical Society on this project. I also show my personal work several times a year in galleries. As a bookbinder, I sell my unique, handmade blank journals. I recently completed over seven years of arts study at Orange Coast and Coastline Community Colleges, specializing in Exhibition Design. This study was in addition to my B.A. in English, Emphasis Literature, from The University of British Columbia. I will soon begin my M.A. degree online in my professional field, Holocaust and Genocide Studies. I plan for my study foci to be the creation of Holocaust exhibits, illustrated Holocaust literature for children, anal/or the creation of Holocaust monuments. I had reservations about applying, as I assumed the competition would be high, and I do not have any direct, formal background in arts & culture. I am, however, a fully trained graphic designer and artist, so I do have some related experience. I would love to be on this committee and help promote the "City of the Arts" programs in Costa Mesa! I have lived with my husband and two children, 5 and 8, in Costa Mesa for 7 years and we plan on making this our home for a very long time. Service to the community has always been important to me;.from my first job as a Recreation Leader for the city of La Palma from 1998-2000, to my service in the United States Army Reserve from 2001-20010 then to leading a church group on a missions trip to the London Olympics in 2012. 1 also enjoy volunteering for the OC Registrar of Voters at the polls on election days. I have worked at Morgan Stanley in Newport Beach since 2001 and among my many skills is my ability to plan, market and lead events for clients at various locations in Orange County. Many studies have been completed on the benefits that the arts brings to not only individuals but whole communities as well (Fiske 1999, W21esh 2001, Ball an Keating 2002, Goss 2000, Guetzkow 2002 ). I would love to see our city reap the same benefits, not only in terms of beauty and creativity, but revitalization of our neighborhoods, improved academic performance and psychological well-being, the stimulation of creating social capital and achieving community goals. l have been involved in public service and art for nearly 20 years. 1 have taught Elementary school and High School art in the traditional brick and mortal as well as the online settings. In addition to incorporating the arts and creative expression within the regular elementary classroom, I have taught Ceramics, Art 1, Art History and Appreciation and Digital Art and have never tired of encouraging others in their artistic expression. I havenfa shied away projects ranging from larger and long term to smaller and detailed. I co -create a non-profit to aid in the education and development of children in Uganda and I am currently voluntarily teaching art at Sonora School to grades 1 st - 6th. When there was a gap in my childrene art experience, I worked with the Sonora administration and staff to build an art program for the attending students. Sonora now has a yearly Evening of the Arts I organized where every first through sixth grader has at least one 2D piece and one ceramic piece on display. In addition to the art display there are hands on activities for families to enjoy together along with a display of both student driven musical and dramatic performances.
