I am a fortyfive-year-plus resident of the City of Costa Mesa. I have attended OCC, shop at the local I businesses and routinely utilize many of the parks, schools, libraries and other community resources. I am very concerned about the future utilization of city land going forward. I am also concerned about the surrounding area projects that have impacts on the city. I have wide ranging experience in many areas that enables me to have a very well rounded, objective view of issues. I am a UCI graduate after my two years at OCC. I sat on the OCE=RS board for seven years which gave me experience in board rules of order, institutional investing, budgeting, auditing, human resources, IT contract issues and more. My other experience includes Eagle scout, crime analysis/forensics, leadership/supervision, outdoor enthusiast, reading, gardening, computer/internet and I try to keep on local and national current events in politics. As a long-time resident of the Costa Mesa, I would like to contribute to the community as a member of the city's Bikeway and Walkability Committee. Having participated in a variety of community activities (booster club at Estancia High School, the Sister City exchange program, UNESCO), I am familiar with group dynamics in the civic arena. For this committee, in particular, I can contribute from a variety of perspectives. I commute to work on a bicycle, do most of my errands by bike, ride with a cycling team, and have cycled self-contained from Canada to San Francisco. I know the streets of Southern California very well, and having experienced the roads from both a cyclist's and driver's point of view, I can identify areas where improvement is warranted and can offer insight into what I have seen working well in other areas. In addition, I was nit by a car and seriously injured while riding home from work last year on a surface street in the city, so I carry that perspective, as well. After attending several bikeways -related meetings of the OCTA, I appreciate how vital it is that our city forms a group to address the issues relating to cycling and walking throughout our communities. Having lived in the City of Costa Mesa since 1972, 1 have walked here for years. In the last 2-3 years I have become an avid bike rider. My goal is to ride 100 miles a week. Currently my rides take me mostly to Newport Beach or Huntington Beach utilizing our City bike lanes, the Santa Ana River Trail and streets where these trails end. I am familiar with the areas that would benefit from improvements to the Master Plan. Some solutions could be as simple as connectivity, while other may require extensive improvements to allow for biking and walking. At Orange Coast College I chaired many events; however, one that really impacted my life was chairing Special Olympics, an event for kids with special needs. As chair 1 designated tasks, created schedules, provided support and learning opportunities to both my committee and the kids who came to compete. My goal was to construct a successful event where the volunteers came to understand different people's needs, to learn that everyone counts. To see the smiles from the 350 participants proved to me that the event was a success and made me realize that when one impacts someone's life positively, brings happiness and compassion—skills that are rare but essential in a leader. Seeing these physically challenged kids give their best inspired me to become more involved in student government—so I ran for Student Senator, f had success in student government at OCC. I was elected Senator and appointed as a District Student Council representative. In which f had the pleasure to work on legislation, resolutions, and represented more than 30,000 students. In the positions that 1 have held, it has tested my character and inspired in me the need to remain open to diversity and lead those around me. And the lessons of these experiences have strengthened my leadership skills due to the understanding of different cultures and human personalities. I also decided to give back to my community by becoming a tutor at Save Our Youth. All of these experiences— chairing the Special Olympics committee, the many student government experiences I had, and tutoring_ at Save Our Youth—have taught me that leadership is not about being dominant, but being able to walk beside those who struggle. Now f am a college student at University of California, Irvine who is expanding his education, knowledge, and opportunities to succeed in life. I realize now that I am responsible for people around me and every choice I make can affect others. My daily walk through the city of Costa Mesa has been a reminder of being a successful community leader, focusing on servitude to the people, community, and to myself. As member of the committee, I would work with City staff to explore and propose opportunities to increase paths or take advantage of existing trails or channels to provide a safe route for pedestrians and cyclists. Improving accessibility is good for the health of residents, the environment, reducing traffic, and improving access between the various neighborhoods within the City. I also view this as a safety issue because clearly marked or designated paths reduce accidents. Why I wish to Serve As a future homeowner in the city Costa Mesa (we are in escrow as of 05106115, scheduled to close mid-May) I am excited to be a part of the Bikeway and Walkability Committee. My husband and I are avid walkers and enjoy getting to know our surroundings by foot. By walking and biking, you really get to understand a city's personality otherwise missed by driving around. There are also problem areas that need to be addressed on the Westside of Costa Mesa. Walking around at night or at other times of the day may even be considered unsafe by some ("exciting" to others), and my husband and 1 have been confronted by the homeless and drug -users while walking to restaurants and the 24 Hour Fitness at Triangle Square. As young homeowners, addressing these issues will be a top priority for our new family. Qualifications that would benefit the Committee I have a Bachelor's degree in Business and Marketing from Cal Poly Pomona, and a Master's degree in Organizational Leadership from the University of Laverne. I also recently completed my Certificate studies at the Interior Design Institute of Newport Beach. "Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of a bike ride" — John F. Kennedy I am a longtime (37 year) resident of Costa Mesa. During the last five years I have become more involved in the community and with city issues. I am interested in finding ways to meet the needs and desires of the residents, and the businesses that serve the residents. My interest in the theories and principles of urban planning grew out of my employment in a real estate -related field, and also due to my son who works in the planning profession. He is an avid cyclist who encouraged me to return to cycling and stimulated my interest in urban and transportation planning. As part of the Bikeability and Walkability Committee's task of reviewing, updating and implementing the city's Master Plan of Bikeways, I would focus on ideas and principles that could benefit Costa Mesa. These would include the creation of more walkable and bikeable neighborhoods, widening our transportation choices and making our streets more predictable for cars, bicycles and pedestrians. One goal would be to make certain that the bikeways would make residents feel that cycling/walking is safe so they could get out of their cars and bike or walk to destinations. I feel that education of the public is important, not only in terms of the safe way to ride a bike, but also how bicycling and being a pedestrian helps our economy by increasing sales volume, leads to a healthier community, and makes our city a more desirable place to live. I would gladly share with the committee my research with respect to how other cities have developed beneficial bicycle and pedestrian plans and my firsthand experience with outreach programs. I've decided to take it upon myself to become a more active participant in the city I've called home for over 10 years. As a recreational road cyclist, I feel I have a closer connection to this particular committee since I want to see positive changes that harmonize cyclist, pedestrians, and most importantly, cars on our roads. To me, the natural progression of urbanizing cities is providing residents alternative modes of transportation. As Costa Mesa continues to grow and many of our everyday chores become conveniently located "just down the street", it's important to consider and promote a healthy and active lifestyle. This is an opportunity to get out of the car so we can meet our neighbors, experience new areas, and remind ourselves why we call Costa Mesa home. Being a part of this committee is my opportunity to share with others my experiences on the road and where I feel areas can be improved. My qualifications include a Bachelor's Degree in Housing and Community Development from Arizona State University. Many of those courses focused on New Urbanism theories of multi -modal interactions between city and pedestrians. I'm also an active member of the Urban Land Institute, an organization that fosters advancing land use policies in the built environment. And as mentioned, I am a road cyclist; this qualification helps me contribute practicalities, not just theories to our roadways. This is just one of the reasons I wish to serve as a member on the Bikeway & Walkability Committee. Biking has always been apart of my life, since I learned how to ride on two wheels. Since then, I am grateful to have biked in many parts of the world, and now as a Costa Mesa resident, it brings me much joy to be able to travel across town with my own two legs. Previously, I have studied Transportation Engineering at the Univercity of California at Irvine, and worked as a transportation planner for a consulting group in Irvine. As a transportation planner I helped develop Bicycle Master Plans for cities in Orange County, including Santa Ana, as well as worked with OCTA on the Orange County District Bikeways for District 1,2 and 4. I have been a Costa Mesa resident since 1991 and often ride and bike at Fairview Park, around town, and along the Back Bay bicycle trail. I also have two children that are NMUSD students and both of them ride to school everyday on their bicycles. They also travel to sports practice and travel to the beach on their bikes. I have a passionate interest and concern how Costa Mesa school students can safely travel to and from their school, i also recognize the growing number of bike commuters that travel the streets of Costa Mesa. I walk our neighborhood, I take hikes and I am "in step" with the needs and requirements for safe and sensible residential walking conditions. i have been a personal witness to local conversion of residential areas without sidewalks to installation of sidewalks (Eastside Costa Mesa) and experienced the transition from resident provided trash receptacles to Service provided receptacles. I recognized the inevitable conflict from smaller trash receptacles which traditionally were left out on the sidewalk to the new much larger receptacles which would no longer be suitable on sidewalks since they would block pedestrian traffic. I suggested to the city early on that a new directive be issued to residents that trash receptacles should be moved to the street but that suggestion was rejected. Currently all trash receptacles are brought out to the street as I suggested, seems like residents figured that out for themselves after experiencing great inconvenience from blocked sidewalks. I understand the needs of young families that might be pushing a double stroller down the street to aging population that needs level and walkable sidewalks for their safety. I am committed to preserving our great city as myself and other members of our family have made the decision to live here and to insure that our investment in the community and financial investment in home ownership is protected and not just maintained but improved. When I saw the notice for the formation of this new committee I felt compelled to seek out and apply for a position on this committee. Not just because I have hands on experience in both aspects of biking and walking but because I foresee an increase in bike commuters and foot traffic necessitating a forward thinking plan. I am a 32 year old Costa Mesa resident and care deeply about the current state of our city and it's politics. I feel that the younger segment of our population has been woefully underrepresented and need to get more involved in all facets of the decision making process within Costa Mesa. I have owned an operated a successful small business for over 7 years and would love the opportunity to put some of my skills, drive, and passion into the city that I've grown to love. graduated from the University of Denver with a degree in Finance and have owned a house in Eastside Costa Mesa for 2 years (lived in the area for 10). While this committee handles a small subset of the challenges facing Costa Mesa I think that it has the opportunity to change our city for the better. As Costa Mesa continues to grow and change we need to be able to adapt with it. The dramatic improvements and gentrification in many of our neighborhoods lends itself perfectly to alternative modes of transportation. As an Orange County native with a passion for bikes and commerical real estate commitments in Costa Mesa, I have a significant interest in the development and implementation of the city's bike and walkability plan. For nearly 3 years now, my family (including 2 young childern) have been a one car, one cargo bike family. As someone who lives this style of living every day, I know the development of a safe alternative transportation network is germaine to enhancing a 'car light' lifestyle which is growing in popularity. I currently live in Santa Monica and as a member of the bike community, my family regularly participates in programs such as Bike -it Walk -it to School, Ciclavia, Kidical-Mass and demonstrations at the city's bike safety campus. I moved to Costa Mesa at the age of 12 and spent most of my time riding around what we have developed into the beautiful "Fairview Park". Now more than 30 years later I continue to hold great pride in being a Costa Mesean and my 20 years of owning a home in Costa Mesa. For the last decade I have shared my love of biking in and around Costa Mesa with my wife of 20+ years and our two teens.
