I am a relatively new resident of Costa Mesa, having lived here for 18 months. When we were
looking for a home to purchase, we wanted to find one near a park. We have a dog and enjoy the
outdoors, so the home we sought -out near Wilson Park seemed perfect for our needs. Having
lived near parks my whole life, this was an important amenity. The most important aspect of
managing parks is maintaining beauty, safety, and accessibility. We have had quite a few challenges with Wilson Park, which is what initially sparked
my interest in becoming more involved in the community.
There has been quite a bit of attention lately on Fairview Park and its importance as a landmark. There is no doubt that it is a
beautiful park and it should be welcoming and accessible to ALL Costa Mesans. Furthermore, there are 28 other parks that can be
enjoyed by our residents; these open spaces are imperative to the balance of this city. High quality parkways are also a mq&T
—
as they need to be improved and maintained with drought -tolerant landscaping.

In Costa Mesa, and many other communities, there has been an increase in homelessness and
transiency due to many factors including AB109 and Proposition 47. These measures have
provided an extra challenge that did not exist to this extent many years ago.

For this reason, the safety aspect of park management is of significant concern. I am currently in the process of training

In regards to recreation, I have been involved in many city programs for my children and myself

over the years. 1 worked for a short time for the City of Perris as a Cheerleading Coach. My
children were involved in a wide array of community activities in the different cities where
we lived. For eight years, I was the Head Varsity Cheer Coach at the high school where I teacher.
I have also been an advisor and/or coordinator for many other youth programs including Peer Assistance Leadership, Substance
Abuse Prevention and
Education, Tobacco Use Prevention, Students Assistance Programs, and several other clubs and activities.
As far as my education, I have a Bachelors degree in Liberal Studies with an Emphasis in Health in
American Society from Cal State Fullerton. I earned my teaching credential in Health Science and
a Masters Degree in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment.
Currently, I am completing my 19th year as a High School teacher. I also serve on my school's
Leadership Team as well as two different curriculum councils at the District level. Prior to my career in education, I
worked as an accounting clerk for a National newspaper for six years and for Bank of America for four years.
I think I would be a positive asset to the Parks and Recreation Commission as I have a wide array of experience in many areas and
work well with people. I pride myself in that I am a good listener and try to make logical decisions based on facts provided.
I have a sincere desire to help people and to help Costa Mesa be the best it can be by providing and maintaining parks and
recreation that is safe, beautiful, and accessible to all.

1. Indicate why you wish to serve on this Commission. Provide any experience or qualifications you may possess that

I wish to serve on the Costa Mesa Parks and Recreation Commission in order to enhance my civic
engagement with the City of Costa Mesa. I moved to Costa Mesa in June 2015 and am interested in
getting more involved with my local community. As a dog owner, health and wellness supporter, and
sports fan, I often use many of the local parks and recreation areas. In addition, I have a great deal of
experience in city and civic engagement from my previous time in Los Angeles.
As the former Director of the UCLA Volunteer Center (2011-2015), I worked closely with the Westwood
Village Improvement Association (WVIA) on a variety of beautification projects in/around Westwood
Village and UCLA, including tree planting and evaluation, park clean-ups, and homeless support
services. I also worked intimately with UCLA Recreation on activities and events for students, staff,
faculty, alumni, and community members, including adaptive recreation programs. In my staff role at
UCLA, I reported to the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Government and Community Relations. Through
that role, I worked with 15 Los Angeles City Councilmembers, 5 County Supervisors, as well as a handful
of state and federal elected officials to create and execute community service projects all over Los Angeles
and attended by various elected officials and their teams. This work with local K-12 schools, parks,
shelters, beaches, senior centers, veterans facilities, food banks, and other neighborhood centers allowed
me to learn and teach others about the cost and need for effective landscaping, tree planting/removal,
mulching, and other park and recreation services. I feel my previous volunteer and staff work through
UCLA and WVIA will lend itself to me being able to make an immediate impact on the Costa Mesa Parks
and Recreation Commission.
I am a highly motivated and driven education and non-profit professional who looks to consistently
build upon my previous experience in high-level administrative support, volunteer recruitment and
retention, business development, fundraising and donor cultivation, academic and student affairs, and
event management. As a Senior Analyst at UC Irvine, I have access to a variety of resources and
knowledge that will help me in a role on the Costa Mesa Parks and Recreation Commission. I feel
comfortable that my previous experience will allow me to work with the City Council and various City
departments to be an effective leader on issues related to parks and parkways.
Thank you for your time and consideration. Should you have additional questions about my
qualifications, please feel free to contact me using the given contact information.

This i(1s my thlr time applying for this Commission in the past —7 years; my professional interest has
remained steadfast over the years, while my personal knowledge and usage of the Park & Rec system
in the city has only increased. I have been afforded unique perspectives on different parks across
these 4 CM neighborhoods in which I have resided; I have also had the opportunity to engage with the
excellent recreation programming- from dragging my husband to salsa lessons, to shooting hoops
during open gym, to mommy -and -me baby classes and now, having my 5 year old enrolled in
gymnastics. I understand the programming offered and have countless ideas for innovation and
sharing best practices with the Commission. We are an extremely high -use family of the Park & Rec
system here in this city! Most recently, we have settled into what we hope is our'forever home' in
Mesa Verde and I have been able to benefit from the excellent park system in this community; as a
member of the Commission, I will focus on ensuring similar infrastructure is in walking distance to all
homes in Costa Mesa. I am a resident with a strong interest in serving my community. At this time, I
feel that my professional and family obligations will allow me sufficient time to dedicate to serving
Costa Mesa. I have been a resident of Costa Mesa for well over 10 years.

infrastructure. In particular, I have done work Park & Rec in several localities: Santa Ana Park &

HEAL Collaborative in Anaheim, to name a few. In addition to having taught Public Policy, Urban
Politics and American Government at CSULB and UCI, I have given guest lectures to the UCI Masters
in Urban Planning students over the years about, among other things, how to create, implement, and
measure successful physical activity community based programs. Nationwide, I have given the
following invited conference presentations, representative of my career with an unwavering focus on
park equity, safety and usage for all.

To Whom It May Concern:
I am excited about the opportunity to apply for the opening to serve on the Parks & Recreation
Commission. I grew up in Newport Beach and have lived and worked the last 16 years in Costa Mesa. My
wife and I have two girls and together we all enjoy our various parks and recreation programs. Over the
years we have utilized many recreational offerings from taking our dog to Bark Park to picnics at
Tewinkle Park. We enjoy many of the classes and programs the city offers. My girls are currently taking
gymnastics and ballet.
I have an undergraduate degree is in Agricultural Business and a Master's in Business Administration. I
am an entrepreneur at heart and have run my own small business for many years. I have a passion for
Parks, plants and the general outdoors. Growing up I had my own residential landscape / maintenance
company for 5 years and for a period of time In high school worked at Rogers Gardens in Newport
Beach. While in college I also studied ornamental horticulture. 1 still garden heavily today at my home in
East Costa Mesa.
I feel my unique background in agricultural business and ornamental horticulture as well as my passion
for parks will make me a great addition to the committee. I have a strong desire to give back to the
community that has done so much for me and my family. I feel I could work effectively with the fellow
committee members, city council, residents and local businesses. I love this city and am committed to
seeing it be the best it can be.

To Whom It May Concern,
I am submitting my application for consideration for an appointment to the vacant seat on
the Parks and Recreation Commission. I have been a resident of the City of Costa Mesa
since 1989. My wife, Jennifer, and I have raised our two boys, Ryan and Jake, here in our
hometown. Over the past 28 years I have been involved as a volunteer, board member and
coach in Costa Mesa National LL, AYSO Region 120 and numerous other organizations. I,
and my family, have been the direct beneficiaries of the tremendous recreational and
community opportunities made available by the City of Costa Mesa. I understand the
importance of the programs and facilities that the City provides. I know that they are
critical to health and long term development of our community.
In addition, I worked for the City of Costa Mesa in the capacity of Recreation Manager. This
experience gave me an even greater appreciation for the overall programs that the City
provides. Everything from the ROCKS program, Art in the Parks, Senior Center and the
Downtown Recreation Center all serve a need within our community. The overall
integration of Recreational programs with the Parks facilities and Staff provide a
foundation from which so many other community groups can grow and further serve our
residents.
I believe that the management and development of our parks, public areas and open space
plans will be key to the growth and overall health of our community. We need to make
sure that we are providing services to all areas of our community and to every _

Issues in this community, including homelessness, park usage, encroachment, sequestration, maintenance, and facilities
planned and executed for parks, are, or should be, of concern to every resident. A park should be a place where kids can
play freely and without undue interference, whether that interference be from benign, or malignant forces.
When I was a kid I lived two houses away from the neighborhood park. In it there was a baseball field open to all, a large
grassy swale where you could run with your dog, trees, hedges, and places for kids to hide. One of our favorite games
was hide -and -go -seek. You could get up an impromptu game of catch, or run a footrace, or fly a kite; you could ride your
bike across the grass, fly a model airplane, swing on the swing -set, or get a drink from the drinking fountain. In summer,
there were recreation counselors who would help you with various crafts; they showed movies on an improvised screen
made from a bedsheet, and once in a while put on a fair, with games and prizes. We don't see any of this in Costa Mesa.
Our parks here are full of homeless people. There are no recreation counselors and precious few park rangers. You
could never play hide -and -go -seek. Your dog must be leashed. The swing -sets are now complicated and expensive
kiddie -recreation machines, made from plastic. Where a park was once a community meeting place, now all sense of
community is missing. The bathrooms are locked, the baseball diamonds are fenced. There aren't even any hedges or
bushes where a ten -year-old who has drunk too much soda pop can surreptitiously go to relieve himself. A pickup game?
Impossible. Games are played only under the aegis of sports associations or commercial groups. You'll never see a
movie projected on a bedsheet, with family groups spreading a picnic on a blanket to watch during evenings in summer.
A park should be more than an "open space". It should be a place where local people may gather, mingle, talk, and do
activities. It should be a place where people of all ages can come for rest, or for exercise; for stimulation, or for contem-
plation; for interaction, or solitude. It should be as free of regimentation as is possible, but should have activities available
for people who cannot create their own.
It is because I believe in these things that I am applying to serve on the parks and recreation commission.

I am a lifelong Costa Mesa resident. I own and live in a house located on Canyon Park. I also have a very active
five year old. Because of these reasons, I want to make sure that Costa Mesa parks are protected and utilized to
provide for the current and future needs of Costa Mesa residents. In addition, my son has enjoyed many of the
great classes offered by the recreation department, and I want to play a role in the parks and recreation
commission to help Costa Mesa provide these great services to its residents.
I believe that my personal experiences would allow me to become an asset to the commission. As a lifelong
resident, property owner, and mother, I believe that I have a unique understanding of what services and benefits
that Costa Mesa residents are looking for from the parks and recreation department. I likewise believe that my
professional skills and qualifications would allow me to become an asset to the commission. I am a real estate
attorney, which provides me a unique understanding of land use issues, government and local regulations, and how
to work well with others.
I would be thrilled to have the opportunity to volunteer my time on this commission.

I've lived in Costa Mesa for 28 years and wish to serve on the Parks and Recreation Commission because
I'd like to continue contributing my time and effort to building a strong future for Costa Mesa including plently
of recreation opportunities and protected open space. Over the last several years I've become well informed on
issues facing our City, as well as more involved by attending City Council, Commission and other community
meetings. Through this involvement, as well as serving on the Fairview Park Citizens Advisory Committee, I
solidified my passion for participation, as well as joy in contributing my skills and experience to the discussions
and work at hand.
I'm well versed in the issues and opportunities concerning Costa Mesa's parks. I'm a founding member of Orange
Coast River Park Inc., and since 2010 have served the organization as a board member, Vice Chair, as well as,
President. Well informed on environmental issues and City policies, I enjoy the long hours of reading and
required of a Parks and Recreation Commissioner.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Kindest Regards,
Anna

As a proud resident of Costa Mesa, parent, and local business owner, I feel I have an obligation to contribute back to
the community that has provided such an amazing place to raise a family. More specifically, I would like my kids to
grow up in the best Costa Mesa possible. Given my experience and skill set, serving on the Parks and Recreation
Committee is the best forum for me to provide value to the community
My wife and I have two young kids, and are so appreciative for the local parks and use them almost daily. Our personal
favorite park is Harper Park, where my son and I play soccer and fly kites. We see firsthand the condition of the parks,
challenges facing them, and the current resident experience.
Beyond being a frequent park user, my wife and own a Costa Mesa based construction company. My professional
experience can add value in a few ways:
1. 1 am faced with the task of managing complex budgets for my projects and my own business. We make decisions
everyday on how to best source the requirements of operating a business in this state. Items like the cost of
labor, health insurance, workers comp insurance, and managing vendors; no doubt these items make up the
bulk of the City's budget as well.
2. As a professional builder and a graduate from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo with a degree in Construction
Management; I understand how projects are built and how much they should cost. I can provide great insight
into the costs and delivery of any proposed improvements including any structure, landscaping project, or civil
engineering project.
Here is a list of my specific qualifications to make me qualified for this committee:
• Resident of Costa Mesa and frequent patron of the local parks. In fact, I grew up using these same parks and
hope to preserve them for perpetuity
• Avid golfer, who regularly plays Costa Mesa County Club and grew up using the facilities there.
• Owner of a Costa Mesa based commercial construction company with experience in all types of construction and
engineering projects.
• Parent of two young children for whom my sole motivation is to provide them with the best Costa Mesa for them
to grow up in.
Thank you for your consideration as a fellow committee member.
