HomeMy WebLinkAbout210 - Amending ORD 177; Merit Increase Authoritylows: as follows: On ORDINANCE NO. 210 AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA, AMENDING ORDINANCE NO. 177. The City Council of the City of Costa Mesa does hereby ordain as fol- SECTION 1. Section 4 of Ordinance No. 177 is hereby amended to read "SECTION 4. CHANGES IN SALARIES. The City Manager shall have the authority to grant merit increases to employees on the basic salary schedule. No merit increase in excess of ten and one half percent (10-1/2%) shall be granted in any one (1) year, except on approval by the City Council, and no increase shall be granted in excess of the maximum salary established for such position by Resolution of the City Council. The year above referred to shall be the twelve-month period commencing on the date the employee was employed by the City for such position. Any increase given pursuant to this Section shall fix the salary at a figure shown on the basic salary schedule." SECTION 2. URGENCY. The City Council does hereby find and determine that an emergency exists which requires that this Ordinance take effect as soon as possible, and the facts constituting such urgency are as follows: The merit system, when adopted, was based upon the concept that merit raises would be based on the anniversary date of the employee, and the wording of the Ordinance unintentionally prohibited this. In order to accomplish the purposes of the merit system, it is necessary that this Ordinance take effect immediately.
