A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA, PROTESTING THE PARTITION OF THE CITY'S BORDERS BY ASSIGNING TWO SEPARATE TELEPHONE AREA CODE NUMBERS BY THE CALIFORNIA PUBLIC UTILITIES COMMISSION. WHEREAS, we, today's citizens of the City of Costa Mesa, that coastal tableland above Newport Bay, proudly trace our history to the Spanish land grant of 1810, and to the towns of Fairview and Harper; and WHEREAS, we, today's citizens of the City of Costa Mesa, incorporated on June 29, 1953, with acreage of 3.5 square miles and a population of 16,840 residents; and WHEREAS, our City of Costa Mesa, Hub of the Harbor Area, City of the Arts, and a major commercial, industrial, and cultural center of Orange County, has grown over the last 44 years to a population of over 100,000 and acreage encompassing some 17 square miles; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the territorial borders of the 17 square miles of the City of Costa Mesa are held as a contiguous and inseparable whole; that we, the residents and citizens, together with the civic leaders and business community of the City of Costa Mesa hold our geographic integrity and our territorial imperatives as terse and impenetrable, and with inalienable rights of nonpartition by outside perpetration for any purposes whatsoever. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we, the City Council of the City of Costa Mesa specifically and directly object strenuously and vociferously to the California Public Utilities Commission, to their agents and assignees, as to the partitioning of our geographic borders by the bifurcation of a single telephone area code into two separate area codes. PASSED AND ADOPTED this 20th day of January, 1997.
