HomeMy WebLinkAbout97-08 - Protesting the Partition of City's Borders by Assigning Two Telephone Area Code NumbersRESOLUTION NO.
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA, PROTESTING THE
PARTITION OF THE CITY'S BORDERS BY ASSIGNING
TWO SEPARATE TELEPHONE AREA CODE NUMBERS
BY THE CALIFORNIA PUBLIC UTILITIES COMMISSION.
WHEREAS, we, today's citizens of the City of Costa Mesa, that coastal
tableland above Newport Bay, proudly trace our history to the Spanish land grant of
1810, and to the towns of Fairview and Harper; and
WHEREAS, we, today's citizens of the City of Costa Mesa, incorporated on
June 29, 1953, with acreage of 3.5 square miles and a population of 16,840
residents; and
WHEREAS, our City of Costa Mesa, Hub of the Harbor Area, City of the Arts,
and a major commercial, industrial, and cultural center of Orange County, has grown
over the last 44 years to a population of over 100,000 and acreage encompassing
some 17 square miles;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the territorial borders of the 17
square miles of the City of Costa Mesa are held as a contiguous and inseparable
whole; that we, the residents and citizens, together with the civic leaders and
business community of the City of Costa Mesa hold our geographic integrity and our
territorial imperatives as terse and impenetrable, and with inalienable rights of
nonpartition by outside perpetration for any purposes whatsoever.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we, the City Council of the City of Costa Mesa
specifically and directly object strenuously and vociferously to the California Public
Utilities Commission, to their agents and assignees, as to the partitioning of our
geographic borders by the bifurcation of a single telephone area code into two
separate area codes.
