HomeMy WebLinkAbout97-39 - Supporting Senate Bill 257, Redevelopment Agency to Subsidize a Police Officer's Down Payment on a HomeRESOLUTION NO. -0 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA, SUPPORTING SENATE BILL 257. WHEREAS, community oriented policing can be beneficial because the neighbors know their police and vice versa; and WHEREAS, one way to strengthen the relationship between the neighbors and their police is for the police officers to become neighbors; and WHEREAS, the presence of police officers who also reside in neighborhoods can reduce criminal activities; and WHEREAS, economic, physical, and social conditions can discourage police officers from purchasing homes in the communities that employ them; and WHEREAS, Senate Bill 257 would allow a redevelopment agency to subsidize a police officer's down payment for a home if he or she is making 120 percent or less of the County median; and WHEREAS, any officer benefiting from this program must purchase a home to be used as a principal residence in the redevelopment area and reside in that home for 10 years; and WHEREAS, Senate Bill 257 creates another tool to fight blight; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Costa Mesa supports Senate Bill 257.
