HomeMy WebLinkAbout07-51 - Opposing Change in Land Use of Newport Beach Golf Course, Supporting 1100 Bristol Street Site for Recreational PurposesRESOLUTION NO. 07-51 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA, OPPOSING ANY CHANGE IN THE LAND USE OF THE NEWPORT BEACH GOLF COURSE AND SUPPORTING THE DEVELOPMENT OF 1100 BRISTOL STREET SITE FOR ACTIVE RECREATIONAL PURPOSES. THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA HEREBY RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS: WHEREAS, in 1976, the Newport Beach Golf Course began operating and providing low-cost golf opportunities to the community; and WHEREAS, jor more than 30 years the Newport Beach Golf Course has been the only public golf course in the area offering 18 holes of night golf; and WHEREAS, the Newport Beach Golf Course provides affordable golfing opportunities for families, seniors, men, women and children of our community, including active men's and women's clubs, youth programs, and summer youth golf camp, and hosts numerous charity events benefiting local organizations and worthwhile causes; and WHEREAS, the 18 holes of the Newport Beach Golf Course offers an oasis of green space located near the John Wayne Airport and many freeways; and WHEREAS, the use of the golf course's "back 9" for rental car storage or other non -recreational purpose would damage this affordable golf course as a valued amenity and reduce recreational opportunities available to area residents; and WHEREAS, more active lighted facilities for recreational purposes is needed in both Costa Mesa and Newport Beach; and WHEREAS, the current operations on the County property at 1100 Bristol Street will conclude in December of 2007 and no specific reuse has been designated for this site. WHEREAS, any move to locate a parking lot on either the golf course or the Bristol Street parcel would be significant and threatening and begin an airport services encroachment across Bristol and the 73 Freeway. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Costa Mesa opposes any change in the land use of the Newport Beach Golf Course and supports the continued operations of the property as a golf course; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Costa Mesa supports the development of the County property at 1100 Bristol Street for active, lighted recreational purposes.
