HomeMy WebLinkAbout62-101 - Concerning Prayer in Public Schools244 RESOLUTION N0. 62-101 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA RECOMMENDING THE CONSIDERATION AND POSSIBLE ADOPTION OF A CONSTITUTIONAL AMEND14ENT CONCERNING PRAYERS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS. 1,112HEAS, the City Council of the City of Costa Mesa believes that it is vital to the people of our country, with reference to the free expression and exercise of religion, to have individual participation of our reliance upon God through the benefit of prayer, and idHEREAS, the recent decision of the United States Supreme Court concerning the recitation of prayers in the public schools has caused great concern and alarm as to whether or not such decision will impede or affect the individual or congregated participation of our religious way of life through the medium of prayer; and WHEREAS, it appears desirable and advisable to bring to the attention of the Congress of the United States that the people of our nation should have an opportunity to directly express themselves as to the part, if any, the recitation or offering of prayers in the public schools be permitted and that such expression should come by means of an amendment to the United States Constitution. NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Costa Mesa does hereby resolve as follows: 1. 'Chat the representatives of the United States Congress consider the possible adoption and submission to the electorate of these United States an amendment to the United States Constitution by which the individual students in our public schools may freely and without restraint express their religious faith through the medium of prayer. 2. That copies of this Resolution shall be sent to all of our local congressional representatives as well as to the two United States Senators. PASSED AND ADOPTED THIS 16th day of July, 1962.
