RESOLUTION No. 63-47
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA
URGING THE RECOGNITION AND DESIGNATION OF ORANGE COUNTY,
CALIFORNIA, AS A STANDARD METROPOLITAN AREA.
WHEREAS, the federal government designates important statistical areas
in the Nation as Standard Metropolitan Areas; and
WHEREAS, Orange County, California, since 1949 has been considered a part of
the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area - now called the Los Angeles -Long Beach Standard
Metropolitan Area, with no mention of Orange County in its title; and
WHEREAS, if Orange County were separated from Los Angeles County and de-
signated a separate metropolitan area, the Orange County, California, Standard
Metropolitan Area would probably be the 26th largest of the 204 big metropolitan
areas of the Nation; and
WHEREAS, fast-growing Orange County, as long as it is lumped into the
so-called Los Angeles - Long Beach area, is lost to the notice of researchers,
industrialists, marketers, investors and federal and state agencies who study the
metropolitan areas for economic ratings; and
WHEREAS, statistics on Orange County, the fastest-growing major county in
the Nation, are needed in comparison to other metropolitan areas in order to
attract industry and investment and to aid in future planning and development by
local, state and federal agencies; and
WHEREAS, population estimates show that Los Angeles County, on its own, is
now rapidly moving ahead of the six -county Chicago Standard Metropolitan Area,
and that Orange County can now be separated from Los Angeles County for statistical
purposes without affecting the standing of the Los Angeles Area as "Second Largest
Market in the United States," second only to the New York Area;

that the Committee on Standard Metropolitan Areas, Bureau of the Budget, Executive
