RESOLUTION N0. 64-51
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA, COMMENDING THE COSTA MESA
HIGH SCHOOL MUSTANG SWIMMING TEAM AND COACH DON
LOWRY FOR BREAKING THE WORLD'S RECORD IN THE 100 -
MILE SWIMMING RELAY.
LWHEREAS,
the Costa Mesa High School Mustang swimming team under the
direction of Coach Ion Lowry has broken the world's record for the 100 -mile
relay swimming; and
WHEREAS, on May 22, 23 and 24, 1964, the Costa Mesa High School swimming
team has achieved this record in accordance with the rules and regulations
set forth for this event; and
WHEREAS, this event was conducted without the benefit of substitution for
any member of the team; and
WHEREAS, it takes 7,040 laps in the 25 -yard pool of the Costa Mesa High
School to complete 100 miles; and
WHEREAS, the record-breaking swimming team composed of Russ Erickson, Steve
Henkle, John Hutcherson, Mike Koontz, Dan La Flame, Eric Little, Steve Scott,
Gary Springer, Randy Vernon, and Frank Warner have accomplished this world's
record for 100 -mile swimming relay in the lapsed time of 40 hours, 49 minutes,
and 17 seconds; and
WHEREAS, both the Mustang Team and their Coach deserve thepraise and applause
of the City of Costa Mesa.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Costa
Mesa, that the Costa Mesa High School Mustang swimming team, their coach, Ion
Lowry, be, and the same are hereby formally commended and congratulated for
their achievement of breaking a world's record; and
BE IT FURTHERRESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Costa Mesa, is
hereby directed to enter this Resolution in the permanent records of the City of
Costa Mesa, in order that the proud accomplishment of this outstanding team may
be properly preserved for posterity.
PASSED AND ADOPTED this 1st day of June, 1964.
