RESOLUTION N0. 671
A JOINT RESOLUTION, BEING RESOLUTION NO. 5115 OF THE CITY
COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH AND RESOLUTION N0. 671
OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA, URGING THE
ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS TO LIMIT RUNWAY LENGTH
AND DEVELOP THE ORANGE COUNTY AIRPORT IN THE BEST INTEREST
OF THE SURROUNDING AREAS.
WHEREAS, a community of interest exists between the City of Newport Beach
and the City of Costa Mesa in the future of the Orange County Airport; and
WHEREAS, immediate, concerted and unified action is required to prevent
the development of an international or factory type airport to the detriment of
the surrounding lands and communities; and
WHEREAS, extension of the runways of the County Airport beyond a maximum
length of 7500 feet is unnecessary for the development of the airport in its service
function to local and Orange County industries and residents; and
WHEREAS, any further extension of the airport runways would endanger,
complicate and increase the expense of planned developments to the South and East,
including the proposed San Diego Freeway; and
WHEREAS, expansion of the Doolittle Flight Cone from an international or
factory type airport would directly affect the Cities of Costa Mesa and Newport Beach,
reducing property values and creating undue hazards
in thickly -settled and
highly
developed residential sections; and
WHEREAS, private and public studies and research have indicated that
Orange County will be best served by the development of the County Airport as a
feeder service airport; and
WHEREAS, it is the considered opinion of the City Council of the City of
Newport Beach and the City Council of the City of Costa Mesa that action should be
taken at once by the Orange County Board of Supervisors to limit runway length to
7500 feet or less, and insure the future development of the Orange County Airport
in its service function; and
WHEREAS, a factory type airport is known to be incompatible with a university
development such as that now under consideration by the Board of Regents of the
University of California;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT JOINTLY RESOLVED, BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
NEWPORT BEACH AND THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA, that the Orange County
Board of Supervisors be, and it is hereby, urged to limit runway length to 7500 feet
or less at the Orange County Airport, and to act at once to control, supervise and
guide the development of said County Airport as a feeder service airport rather than an
international or factory type airport; and

be transmitted immediately to the Board of Supervisors of Orange County.
