HomeMy WebLinkAbout790 - Urging Speedy Construction of San Diego FreewayRESOLUTION NO. 790 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA URGING THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS OF THE STATE OF CALIF- ORNIA TO EXPEDITE THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE SAN DIEGO FREEWAY IN ORANGE COUNTY. WHEREAS, the California Highway Commission on February 19, 1953 resolved that portion of Route 158 in the counties of Orange and Los Angeles between Route 1 2 near E1 Toro and the Los Angeles River Freeway (State Route No. 167) to be a J freeway; and WHEREAS, the County of Orange and the State of California entered into a Freeway Agreement dated February 8, 1956, covering the portion of the San Diego Freeway (State Route No. 158) between Bristol Street and the Los Angeles -Orange County line; and WHEREAS, the Federal Government has heretofore declared the San Diego Freeway to be a part of the Interstate Highway System; and WHEREAS, the Division of Highways, Design Section, has completed the final plans for his portion of the San Diego Freeway; and WHEREAS, property has been acquired by the State of California within the City of Costa Mesa, and said property at this time remains vacant and unimproved; and J WHEREAS, the normal growth and development or the City of Costa Mesa is impeded by the delay in construction of the San Diego Freeway; and WHEREAS, the traffic load of major streets, to -wit: Harbor Boulevard and Newport Boulevard within the City of Costa Mesa, is such that the construction of the San Diego Freeway will afford needed relief for this traffic problem; and WHEREAS, the overall traffic burdens of Orange County are such that they warrant the immediate construction of the San Diego Freeway; and WHEREAS, this City Council deems it to be in the best interest of the City of Costa Mesa that the State of California, through its Department of Public Works, Division of Highways, be urged to expedite the construction of the San Diego Freeway; 1 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Costa Mesa that the State of California, Department of Public Works, Division of Highways, be, and the same is hereby, urged and requested to take all steps necessary to expedite the construction of that portion of the San Diego Freeway that lies within the City of Costa Mesa and within the County of Orange; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Clerk of the City of Costa Mesa is hereby directed to forward copies of this Resolution to the Chairman of the California Highway Commission, the Director of the Department of Pablic Works, the District Engineer of the Division of Highways, U. S. Senators Clair Engle and Thomas Kuchel, Congressman James B. Utt, State Senator John A. Murdy, Assemblymen Bruce Sumner and Richard T. Hanna, and request each of the afore- mentioned to take such action as they feel necessary to expedite the construc- tion of the San Diego Freeway. PASSED AND ADOPTED this '(th day of November, 1960.
