HomeMy WebLinkAbout92-86 - Urging Completion of San Joaquin Reservoir Water QualityRESOLUTION NO. 92-86 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA, URGING THE METROPOLITAN WATER DISTRICT OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA TO EXPEDITE THE COMPLETION OF THE SAN JOAQUIN RESERVOIR WATER QUALITY IMPROVEMENT PROJECT. WHEREAS, the City of Costa Mesa receives most of its water from the Mesa Consolidated Water District; and WHEREAS, the Mesa Consolidated Water District owns approximately 20 percent interest in the San Joaquin Reservoir, the remainder of which is jointly owned by the cities of Newport Beach and Huntington Beach, and the Irvine Ranch, South Coast, and Laguna Beach water districts; and WHEREAS, the coastal communities of Costa Mesa, Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach, and Irvine depend heavily on water imported from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California; and WHEREAS, the San Joaquin Reservoir is an important part of the water supply system serving over 400,000 people, many of whom reside and/or work within the Mesa Consolidated Water District; and WHEREAS, the San Joaquin Reservoir, in the event of an unexpected interruption of imports, could provide up to 30 days of emergency water service to these surrounding communities, who are dependent on this valuable water supply; and WHEREAS, the San Joaquin Reservoir must now be frequently closed due to recurrent water quality complications; and WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California has planned to improve the quality of the water distributed from the San Joaquin Reservoir through implementation of the San Joaquin Reservoir Improvement Project; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Costa Mesa call on the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California to resolve this situation by moving expediently to correct the water quality problems at the San Joaquin Reservoir while remaining sensitive to the concerns of all constituents who are benefitted by the Reservoir.
