SUBJECT: CANYON PARK SLOPE UPDATE
Dear Emerson-Pizarek Trust:
The recent rains throughout Southern California have reached record levels. The City of Costa
Mesa faired well; however, there have been some isolated problem areas. The City of Costa
Mesa is monitoring the performance of all slopes within the public right-of-way and will take
temporary measures to protect them.
City staff will be surveying all the slopes within the City's parks and open spaces and the
• properties adjacent to them to determine if measures can be taken to minimize the accumulation
of water at the top•of the slopes. Some of the items that will be evaluated are as follows:
1. Rain Gutters: If your house does not have rain gutters and rain sheet flows from the
roof directly into the yard or area between the edge of the slope and the house, a
report will contain recommendations to install appropriate rain gutters with catch
basins in the ground to drain away from the slope.
2. Grading: If your property's backyard does not drain properly, the water that
accumulates will percolate into the ground and saturate the slope. If you have this
situation, you will be asked to re-grade your backyard and install area drains to collect
the water and drain away from the slope.
3. Structures: Structures between the edge of the slope and your house (retaining walls,
pools, etc.) may contribute to the surcharge of the slope. Staff will identify these
structures and provide recommendations on how to reduce these loads.
In the meantime, if you intend to irrigate areas between the edge of the slope and your house,
please have the irrigation system checked and adjusted to provide the least amount of water
required for the sustenance of your landscape.
