HomeMy WebLinkAbout67-78 - Opposing Mandatory Maximum 56-Hour Week for FiremenyJ RESOLUTION NO. 67-78 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA OPPOSING SENATE BILL 489 ESTABLISHING A MANDATORY MAXIMUM 56 -HOUR WEEK FOR FIREMEN. WHEREAS, the State of California, under the provisions of Senate Bill 489, proposes to designate the maximum duty -hours to be worked by firemen; and WHEREAS, such pre-emption of local authority by the State would impose additional and undue financial burden on the taxpayers because of varying conditions in different Fire Departments throughout the State; and WHEREAS, this City Council is not opposed to the reducing of duty -hours, whenever and wherever economic conditions permit, but is strongly opposed to mandatory legislation of this nature at the State level; and WHEREAS, such pre-emptory legislation would remove from local agencies of government their rightful powers under the home -rule concept as provided in the Constitution of the State of California; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Costa Mesa, that Senate Bill 489 be, and it is hereby, strongly apposed; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the representatives of the City of Costa Mesa in the Legislature of the State of California be, and they are hereby urged to make every effort to secure the defeat of said Senate Bill 489.
