HomeMy WebLinkAbout68-26 - Support for Assembly Bill 1014 - Saddleback Junior College DistrictRESOLUTION N0. 68-26 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA URGING SUPPORT FOR ASSEMBLY BILL 1014 AUTHORIZING SADDLEBACK JUNIOR COLLEGE DISTRICT TO INTER INTO AN AGREEPENT WITH EXISTING JUNIOR COLLEGE DISTRICTS FOR THE EDUCATION OF STUDENTS THEY CANNOT ACCOMODATE. WHEREAS, Saddleback Junior College District was voted into existence in 1967 to become active on July 1, 1968, and at the time of formation, residents in the district were told that the college would start in September, 1968, with approximately 2,000 students; and WHEREAS, Saddleback Junior College District now intends to start with 500 students and force existing junior college districts to educate the balance with- out payment of the $300.00 rental fee per student for facilities and equipment; and WHEREAS, most of the students who will be sent to existing junior colleges will be those in occupational programs which tend to be high capital costs (for instance, the cost of training a data-processing student is $1200.00 as opposed to an average cost of $600.00); and WHEREAS, under the present law the district providing the education will only be able to charge for the average cost, with no rental fee as is charged currently in other districts, and Saddleback Junior College can continue to operate in this fashion for three years; and WHEREAS, this Council deems it unjust and unfair that the taxpayers of the Orange Coast Junior College District should be compelled to pay the major share of the cost of educating residents of the Saddleback District; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Costa Mesa that Assembly Bill 1014, which would permit Saddleback Junior College Dis- trict to enter into agreement with existing junior college districts for the education of students that they cannot accommodate, and pay in addition to the average cost of current operation an amount not to exceed $300.00 per average daily attendance for rent of facilities and equipment, be and the same is hereby unanimously supported; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the representatives of the Orange Coast Junior College District area in the State Legislature are hereby urged to make every effort to secure the passage of Assembly Bill 1014.
