A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA,
CALIFORNIA, REQUESTING THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO PURCHASE
BATA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO, FROM THE MEXICAN GOVERNMENT FOR
TRE PURPOSE OF MAKING THAT TERRITORY THE FIFTY-FIRST S'TA'FF
OF THE UNITETI STATES OF AMERICA.
WHEREAS, this Council believes it to be in the best interest of the
people of the United States of America and She citizens of the Sate of
California tc own property directly south of the State of Callie-,nia, known as
Baja California; and
wHFaEAS, the peninsula of Baja California is attached tc California by
a greater land boundary than it is to Mexico and is separated from the Country
of Mexico by the body of water known as the Gulf of California; and
WHEREAS, there is a tremendous amount of travel by the American people
crossing the border seeking the recreational advantages Baja California has to
offer: and
WHEREAS, he ties between Baja California and the State of California are
so strong that the people already think of Baja California a., an extension of
California except for the customs and immigration check points at the border; and
WHEREAS, part of the greatness of America was achieved by the foresight
and imagination of acquiring valuable, useable territory through the purchase of
adjoining areas, such as the remarkable Louisiana Purchase in 1803 for fifteen
million dollars, the Gadsden Purchase of land from Mexico in 1853 which extended
the southern borders of Arizona and New Mexico, and the outstanding acquisition
of Alaska from Russia in 1867; each was a bargain, each helped make America
great;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of
Costa Mesa, California, hereby requests t at the Congress of <:hese United States
of America irr✓esLigate the possibility or purchasing Baja California from the
Mexican Government;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Costa Mesa,
California, that this Council goes on record as being highly _n favor of Baja
California becoming the fifty-first state of the United Sta'cec of America.
PASSED ATTD ADOPTED this 18th day of November, 1968.
