HomeMy WebLinkAbout69-62 - Orange Freeway - Urging StudiesRESOLUTION 69-62 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA STRESSING THE NECESSITY OF AND URGING THE EXPEDITING OF STUDIES FOR THE ORANGE FREEWAY, AND ITS FUNDING PROGRAM, AND URGING THE EXPEDITING OF THE CORONA DEL MAR AND NEWPORT FREEWAYS TO RELIEVE TRAFFIC CON- GESTION IN THE ORANGE COUNTY COASTAL AREA. WHEREAS, present traffic volume between inland communities and the coast has reached a peak indicated by the current excess of 51,000 cars a day on Newport Boulevard in a section designed for four lanes and now striped for six sub -standard lanes; and WHEREAS, urgent and immediate action is needed to meet the demands of additional anticipated increases resulting from present industrial and residential construction; and WHEREAS, the volume of beach traffic has increased annually and is now at a point where existing facilities are rapidly becoming insufficient to carry the excess load; and WHEREAS, the development of the University of California, Irvine, and the concurrent increase in enrollment is imposing steadily increasing burdens on the traffic arteries serving that area; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Costa Mesa that the Highway Commission of the State of California is hereby requested and strongly urged to take immediate steps to alleviate the situation by expediting: (a) Studies for the proposed Orange Freeway and its financing throughout the county; (b) The funding program for construction of freeways in this area; (c) Completion of the Corona del Mar and the Newport Freeways.
