A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA,
CALIFORNIA, EXPRESSING REGRET ON THE LOSS OF CONGRESSMAN
JAMES B. UTT, ORANGE COUNTY'S REPRESENTATIVE FOR SEVENTEEN
YEARS IN WASHINGTON, D. C.
WHEREAS, Representative James B. Utt, long a leader in Washington as
Congressman from the 35th District, died on March 1, 1970, following a heart
attack; and
WHEREAS, he had served more than seventeen years in Congress for Orange
County and his District, and was one of the most important and influential
Republicans in the House; and
WHEREAS, he was a member of the Ways and Means Committee, and of the
Joint Taxation and Revenue Committee, and credited with a major role in
assuring representation of his party on House committees; and
WHEREAS, Congressman Utt was highly regarded in his District and in his
last election polled more votes than any member of the House, carrying his
District by a three -to -one majority; and
WHEREAS, he was personally a known and a long-time associate of members
of this Council and his loss will be felt, not only in this City, but through-
out the entire 35th District;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA
MESA, that deserved tribute be paid to Representative James B. Utt for his long
and dedicated service in Congress; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Council hereby expresses the deep and
community -wide regret of the City of Costa Mesa over the loss; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Clerk of the City of Costa Mesa is
hereby directed to enter this Resolution in the permanent records of the City,
and transmit a copy thereof to Mr. Utt's family.
