HomeMy WebLinkAbout70-29 - Supporting Representation for Washington D.C.RESOLUTION NO. 70-29 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA, SUPPORTING REPRESENTATION FOR WASHINGTON, D. C., IN THE FORM OF A MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT SIMILAR TO ALL OTHER CITIES IN OUR NATION. THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA, DOES HEREBY RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: WHEREAS, the citizens living within the confines of the District of Columbia are governed by the Congress of the United States; and -- WHEREAS, said residents of the District of Columbia do not, under present law, elect a representative to the Congress of the United States; and WHEREAS, the residents of the District of Columbia are subject to Federal taxation in spite of the fact that they are not represented in Congress; and WHEREAS, the Congress of the United States should unburden itself of the local government of the District of Columbia and allocate their time to more pressing National affairs; and WHEREAS, it is practical for the District of Columbia to be governed in the same manner as other cities in this United States. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA supports the League of Women Voters of Orange Coast in their campaign to obtain a Constitutional Amendment authorizing the residents and citizens of Washington, D. C., a Congressional Representative. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Congress of the United States enact legislation creating a municipal government for the District of Columbia and the City of Washington; and BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that an executed copy of this Resolution be forwarded to each Congress and Senate representative for California with a letter from the City urging their support of the League of Women Voters and that an executed copy of this Resolution be delivered to the President of the League of Women Voters of Orange Coast.
