HomeMy WebLinkAbout70-42 - To Chancellor Aldrich - Concern for Potential Danger to Communities�5 RESOLUTION NO. 70-42 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA, TO CHANCELLOR DANIEL ALDRICH, RECOGNIZING THE ADVANTAGES AND OPPORTUNITIES AFFORDED SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES BY THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, IRVINE, AND ALSO CALLING ATTENTION TO THE CITY OF COSTA MESA'S CONCERN FOR THE POTENTIAL DANGER TO THOSE SAME COMMUNITIES PRESENTED BY CERTAIN UNIVERSITY ACTIVITIES. WHEREAS, the City of Costa Mesa appreciates the many advantages and opportunities afforded by the close proximity of the University of California, Irvine, and desires to be good neighbors and cooperate with the University in every way possible for our mutual benefit; and WHEREAS, the necessity and desirability of open and free discussion of all subjects and the necessity of preserving the University as a place for the free exchange of ideas is recognized and appreciated; and WHEREAS, this City Council is firmly dedicated to the principle of free speech, free assembly, and the non-violent expression of dissent, and naturally concerned with the preservation of peace and tranquility, and believes that the University should foster and encourage all of these ideals; and WHEREAS, it is believed that the presence at the University of those who advocate violence and revolution can be, and often is, a strong factor in the instigation of violence. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the University of California, Irvine, is hereby urged to exercise sound and careful discretion in the selection of teachers and speakers, and that the Chancellor of the University be urged to formulate and implement adequate controls to insure that the expression of ideas in "an orderly and instructive atmosphere" does not lead to the violent and senseless destruction of public and private property at the University or in any of the surrounding communities.
