B. 1701 AS IT MAY BE AMENDED TO DELETE ANY PORTION OF ROUTE 1 OTHERWISE KNOWN AS THE COAST FREEWAY. WHEREAS, there has been introduced into the State Legislative Assembly an Act which if amended will delete a portion of Route 1 otherwise known as the Coast Freeway; and WHEREAS, said Bill and its proposed Amendment are promoted and fostered by a citizen's group known as the Coastal Freeway Fighters of Newport Beach; and WHEREAS, said Bill does not provide for alternates suitable to provide for resulting traffic problems in the event of the elimination of any portion of Route 1; and WHEREAS, any elimination of any portion of Route 1 of the Coast Freeway will create irreparable damages to this City and to the Master Plan of Streets and Highways and to the legal and moral commitments made in connection therewith. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that this City Council is unalterably opposed to A. B. 1701 and to any legislation which in any manner deletes any portion of Route 1 also known as the Coast Freeway. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that any Legislation aimed at deletion of any portion of Route I will destroy and render unusable a complicated community redevelopment study being conducted in the older business section of this City. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that development of the Newport Freeway to Highway 101 which is also Route 1 or the Coast Freeway and the resulting traffic flow to Highway 101 will cause an unmanageable and endless traffic problem. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that any deletion of any portion of the Coast Freeway will necessitate the widening of Highway 101 to almost triple its width which defeats any alleged benefit derived from the elimination of any portion of the Coast Freeway. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this Resolution be provided to the Committee chairman of the Transportation Committees of the State Assembly and the State Senate and to the Assemblyman and Senator representing this City. BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that said Legislation be opposed, that our Assemblyman and Senator be urged to oppose it and that the City Staff take such steps as it may find necessary to implement this Resolution.
