HomeMy WebLinkAbout71-34 - Opposition to SB 333, Cumpulsory ArbitrationRESOLUTION NO. 71-34 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA, EXPRESSING ITS STRONG OPPOSITION TO THE ENACTMENT OF SENATE BILL 333 BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA. THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA DOES HEREBY RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: WHEREAS, Senate Bill 333 has been introduced in the Senate of the State of California; and WHEREAS, such Senate Bill would, if enacted, remove policemen and firemen from the provisions of the Meyers-Milias-Brown Act, Government Code Sections 3500, at seq.; and WHEREAS, said Senate Bill would impose compulsory and binding arbitration of wages, hours and other conditions of employment for policemen and firemen; and WHEREAS, such compulsory arbitration would be by a third party not elected or appointed within the framework of government process and not responsive to the desires of the electorate, thereby effecting a drastic and unjustifiable change in a vital principle of democratic goverment; and WHEREAS, the Meyers-Milias-Brown Act, now in force, provides an effective and binding procedure within the framework of government, for meeting, confer- ring and arriving at a mutually satisfactory agreement between government employers and employees in the event of labor disputes; and WHEREAS, the benefits of the said Meyers-Milias-Brawn Act are available with respect to policemen and firemen and all other governmental employees without regard to arbitrary classification or distinction; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Costa Mesa that the City of Costa Mesa is strongly opposed to the enactment of Senate Bill 333 for the reasons hereinabove cited; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk be and she is hereby directed to send copies of this resolution to the Honorable Ronald Reagan, Governor of the State of California; the Honorable Alfred H. Song, State Senator; and to the Honorable Walter Karabian, Member of the Assembly; to the League of California Cities and other interested parties. SECTION 1. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this resolution.
