72-06 - Commending Newport-Mesa Unified School District on Action to Combat Venereal Disease
RESOLUTION NO. 72-6 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA, COMMENDING THE NEWPORT -MESA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF TRUSTEES FOR ITS RESPONSIVE AND RESPONSIBLE ACTION TO COMBAT VENEREAL DISEASE. WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Costa Mesa in recognizing the very serious health hazard of the present venereal disease epidemic on the 18th day of May, 1970, passed a resolution calling on the California State Legislature, the California State Department of Public Health, and Orange County Board of Supervisors, to emphasize this very serious health problem and to urge that a campaign be waged to decrease and overcome insidious venereal diseases; and WHEREAS, Assemblyman Robert Burke introduced Assembly Bills 156, 157 and 158, all pertaining to Controlof venereal disease on June 30, 1970, which was approved without opposition; and WHEREAS, the State Department of Public Health in conducting a study on request of a prior resolution by Assemblyman Burke, Assembly Bill 419 of August 7, 1969, stated "Venereal disease education is inadequate in California, especially among the young"; and WHEREAS, Governor Ronald Reagan, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Wilson Riles, the State Board of Education, and the State Depart- ment of Health on December 2, 1971, joined together in encouraging every California Public School District to initiate and expand programs of venereal disease education at once, and did write Suggested State Guidelines for Venereal Disease Education; and WHEREAS, at the December 14 meeting of the Newport -Mesa Unified School District Board, directions were given to the District Superintendent to develop a course of study on Venereal Disease. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Costa Mesa, that this Council commends the Newport -Mesa Unified School District Board of Trustees for its responsive and responsible action to combat this insidious problem of Venereal Disease. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that copies of this resolution be forwarded to Governor Ronald Reagan, State Superintendent of Education Wilson Riles, State Secretary of Public Health, State Board of Education, Assemblyman Robert Burke, v County Director of Public Health, County Superintendent of Schools Robert Peterson, and civic and service organizations.
