HomeMy WebLinkAbout72-14 - Urging U.S. Conference of Mayors to Request President to Re-examin Foreign Commitment PolicyRESOLUTION NO. 72-14 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA, URGING THE UNITED STATES CONFERENCE OF MAYORS TO REQUEST THE PRESIDENT AND THE CONGRESS TO RE-EXAMINE THEIR POLICY, WITH RESPECT TO FOREIGN COMMITMENTS WHERE MILITARY FORCES MAY BE NEEDED. THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA does hereby resolve as follows: WHEREAS, the President, the Congress, the War Department, and the Secretary of War, in the past have appeared to commit the military forces of the United States in Foreign military involvements, which appear to hold the line and not commit for an all out effort which will preserve this country's resources, manpower and economy; and WHEREAS, it is most desirable and in the interest of the health, safety and welfare of all of the citizens of the United States, and is necessary for the preservation of our own resources, manpower, economy and national security; and WHEREAS, this City Council desires to urge upon the President, Congress, War Department and Secretary of War, the importance of shortened foreign military involvements. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Costa Mesa urges the United States Conference of Mayors to request the President of the United States, the National Congress, the War Department and the Secretary of War, a policy of winning as soon as possible, when forced to become involved in military engagements, in order not to destroy our resources, manpower, economy and national security. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the United States Conference of Mayors urge that the no-win policy be abandoned in foreign military involvement forced upon this nation. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the United States Conference of Mayors point out that the national experience in the war in Korea and Viet Nam has demonstrated the futility of the no-win policy in foreign military involvements. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this Resolution be forwarded to the Chairman and members of the Resolutions Committee for the United States Conference of Mayors. BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that the original of this Resolution be made a part of the permanent records of the City of Costa Mesa.
