HomeMy WebLinkAbout72-78 - Urging Postmaster General to Study Door-to-Door Mail DeliveryJ RESOLUTION NO. 72-7$ A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA, REQUESTING NATIONAL REPRESENTATIVES OF THIS CITY TO URGE UPON THE POSTMASTER GENERAL A FEASIBILITY STUDY DESIGNED TO INCREASE MAIL SERVICE ON A DOOR-TO-DOOR BASIS IN THE CITY OF COSTA MESA, AND TO ASCERTAIN THE ADDITIONAL COST TO THE TAXPAYERS ON SUCH SERVICE, IF ANY. THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA DOES HEREBY RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: THAT, WHEREAS, certain areas of the City of Costa Mesa are served with mail service through rural type street mail boxes, instead of house deliveries; and WHEREAS, many citizens of this community have tried without success to improve the mail delivery service within the City, having been met with frustration and defeat in each attempt; and WHEREAS, the citizens of the community have appealed to their duly elected City officials for aid and assistance in obtaining improved mail service within portions of the City of Costa Mesa; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Costa Mesa being the duly elected officials of the City having a concern about any additional cost in postage or tax which may result from the requested improved mail delivery service within the City; and WHEREAS, the entire matter of mail service being within the exclusive jurisdiction of the Federal Government, and under the direction of the Postmaster General for the United States; and WHEREAS, the National Legislative Representatives of this community are best equipped and empowered to take steps in the aid of citizens in the community concerning improved mail delivery service. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the National Legislative Repre- sentatives of this community be urged to seek a feasibility study from the office of the Postmaster General, determining whether or not an increase in direct tax or postage may result from improved mail delivery service within this community, being to wit: house delivery instead of rural box type street delivery. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that if said cost is minimal or non-existent the Postmaster General be urged to take the necessary steps which will result in improved mail delivery service within portions of this community not now enjoying house delivery. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of all correspondence, petitions, letters and documents concerning this matter from the records of the City of Costa Mesa be attached to this resolution, marked Exhibit "A" and by this specific reference made a part hereof. BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that copies of this resolution be distributed to the United States Senator and United States Representative who serve this community, with the fervent request of this Council that action be taken as set forth herein.
