HomeMy WebLinkAbout72-111 - Commending Orange Coast Water Polo SquadRESOLUTION NO. 72-111 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA, COMMENDING THE ORANGE COAST COLLEGE WATER POLO SQUAD FOR ITS ENVIABLE RECORD; URGING PUBLIC PARTICIPATION IN SUPPORT OF THE WATER POLO TEAM, AND URGING ATTENDANCE AT ITS PERFORMANCES. THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA DOES HEREBY RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: THAT, WHEREAS, Orange Coast College has established a Water Polo Squad as part of its athletic program at its facilities in the City of Costa Mesa; and WHEREAS, this Water Polo Team finished Second in the State of California against all schools in the year 1971; and WHEREAS, this team has a win -loss record of 24-1 for the current academic year, its only loss being to the University of California at Berkeley, a much larger school; and WHEREAS, it has won over other four-year colleges and universities; and WHEREAS, the team members are local students, over two-thirds of them living within the City of Costa Mesa and having in many instances received training in the Summer Water Polo Program sponsored by the Costa Mesa Park and Recreation Department; and WHEREAS, said Water Polo Squad plans to go to Puerto Rico for the National Amateur Athletic Union Indoor Open Water Polo Tournament during the Christmas holidays, to there compete with other schools throughout the United States and from foreign countries; and WHEREAS, squad members have raised $2,500.00 of the $6,000.00 required for the trip and are continuing to work on various fund-raising programs, all of which funds must be raised by squad members without contribution from Orange Coast College. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, as follows: THAT, the Orange Coast College Water Polo Squad be commended for its fine and enviable record in intercollegiate competition within its league, and with much larger schools. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Costa Mesa wish the Orange Coast College Water Polo Squad every success at the National Amateur Athletic Union Indoor Water Polo Tournament in Puerto Rico. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the public be urged to make contributions to the Orange Coast Foundation, Orange Coast College, indicating that said contributions are to be used for the Puerto Rico trip. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the public be urged to support any fund --raising activities of squad members, raising funds for said trip. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the public be urged to attend the games in support of the Orange Coast College Water Polo Squad. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution duly executed by the Mayor and City Clerk, duly imprinted with the great Seal of the City of Costa Mesa be presented to the coach of the Orange Coast College Water Polo Squad for the permanent records of the school. BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that an executed copy of this resolution be made a part of the permanent records of the City of Costa Mesa. PASSED AND ADOPTED this 20th day of November, 1972.
