A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA
COMMENDING FIREMAN PHILLIP MELLOTT FOR MERITORIOUS CONDUCT
ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY AS A COSTA MESA FIREMAN,
AND RECITING FACTS IN CONNECTION THEREWITH.
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA DOES HEREBY RESOLVE
AS FOLLOWS:
THAT, WHEREAS, while on route to his residence after shift change
on Sunday morning on the 19th of November, 1972, Fireman Specialist
Phil Mellott observed a fire on the second floor of an apartment located
at 2296 Fountain Way West; and
WHEREAS, without consideration for his own welfare and without
proper protective clothing or equipment, said Fireman Specialist
Phil Mellott entered the burning apartment and directly exposed himself
to a freely burning upstairs bedroom, in order to gain entrance to a
bedroom being occupied by Mrs. Joyce Weatherly; and
WHEREAS, Fireman Specialist Phillip Mellott, using good judgment,
physically removed Mrs. Weatherly from the building; and
WHEREAS, in the opinion of his superiors and of this Council
the actions of Fireman Specialist Phillip Mellott undoubtedly saved
the life of Mrs. Weatherly.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City
of Costa Mesa commend Fireman Specialist Phillip Mellott for meritorious
and humanitarian service in entering a freely burning building without
protective clothing or equipment, for the purpose of saving human life.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that Fireman Specialist Phillip Mellott
be also commended for his quick reaction, instant decision and good
judgment in performing the aforementioned life saving act.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that Fireman Specialist Phillip Mellott be
further commended for his dedication to high professional standards and
that his conduct be exemplified as an inspiration to all other firemen
everywhere.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution duly executed
by the Mayor and the City Clerk of the City of Costa Mesa and bearing
the great Seal of the City of Costa Mesa be presented to Fireman Specialist
Phillip Mellott in an open public Council meeting and that he receive
the warm congratulations of the members of the City Council.
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution duly executed
as aforesaid be made a part of the permanent records of the City of
Costa Mesa.
PASSED AND ADOPTED this 4th day of December, 1972.
