HomeMy WebLinkAbout73-33 - Commending City Employees - El Monte Chemical Plant ExplosionRESOLUTION NO. 72-33 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA COMMENDING CITY EMPLOYEES FOR THEIR DILIGENT AND PROFESSIONAL HANDLING OF THE DISASTER FOLLOWING THE EL MONTE CHEMICAL PLANT EXPLOSION OCCURRING APRIL 2, 1973. THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA DOES HEREBY RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: THAT, WHEREAS, on April 2, 1973 in late afternoon, an explosion occurred at the E1 Monte Chemical Company, located at 829 17th Street in the City of Costa Mesa; and WHEREAS, said explosion killed two employees of the El Monte Chemical Company and injured persons in surrounding business and indus- trial establishments; and WHEREAS, said explosion resulted in a fire at the E1 Monte Chemical Company, and destroyed property for many blocks around the center of the explosion area; and WHEREAS, said explosion deposited debris on public streets and parkways, as well as on private property throughout the area; and WHEREAS, the employees of the City of Costa Mesa were required to and did instantaneously react in meeting the emergency which followed the explosion. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED as follows: THAT, the Fire Department for the City of Costa Mesa is to be commended for containing the fire, and conducting salvage operations following the explosion. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Police Department is to be com- mended for its response in controlling traffic, prohibiting looting, isolating the area and routing the curious away from the danger area. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Street Division and the Park Division of the City of Costa Mesa be commended for their contributions in clearing debris and maintaining access for emergency vehicles, and personnel arriving and leaving the site of the explosion. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the search and rescue team for the City of Costa Mesa in their first actual test as an emergency unit, be commended for their response to the disaster in southwest Costa Mesa. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that all other City employees, whether involved as individuals or through their departments, be commended for the unselfish professional humanitarian response to their duties, in meeting all of the contingencies of the disaster occurring on the afore- said date. BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that a copy of this Resolution be delivered to the Fire Chief and the Chief of Police to be read aloud at the next general muster of Police and Fire Personnel, and that a copy be placed on the bulletin board in each department within the City, so that the respect and appreciation of the City Council may be expressed to all employees.
