A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA, COMMENDING DENNIS
HOLLAND, BUILDER OF ORANGE COUNTY'S BICEN-
TENNIAL SHIP, "PILGRIM".
WHEREAS, Costa Mesa resident Dennis Holland, over the past five
years, has handcrafted a 118 -foot clipper from plans used for building a
clipper in Baltimore, Maryland, in the year 1774; and
WHEREAS, Dennis Holland, with apprentice helpers, has put approx-
imately 40,000 man-hours into the building of the ship, making the
"Pilgrim" resemble her counterpart in most details; and
WHEREAS, the only concessions to modern technology are a radio and
a diesel engine, and the balance of the furnishings and fittings are as
authentic as modern suppliers allow; and
WHEREAS, in August, 1975, the Chairman, on behalf of Orange
County's Bicentennial Committee, held a ceremony on the "Pilgrim's" main
deck and endorsed this vessel as Orange County's Bicentennial Ship; and
WHEREAS, plans are for Mr. and Mrs. Holland, daughter Julie, and
crew to set sail on the "Pilgrim" for a three-month ocean voyage,
scheduled to arrive in New York on July 4, 1976; and
WHEREAS, on July 4, 1976, Operation Sail, a flotilla of approxi-
mately 70 craft from around the world, including the "Pilgrim", will
fire gun and cannon salutes in honor of the Nation's 200th birthday;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of
Costa Mesa that Dennis Holland is hereby commended for his dedication
and perseverance in the building of the "Pilgrim" in honor of our
Nation's 200th birthday;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk be instructed to transmit a
signed copy of this Resolution to Mr. Holland, and to enter it in the
permanent records of the City.
