HomeMy WebLinkAbout76-09 - Sister City Negotiations with Mitaka, JapanRESOLUTION NO. 76-9 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA, SUPPORTING NEGOTIATIONS WITH THE CITY OF MITAEA, JAPAN, AS A SISTER CITY TO THE CITY OF COSTA MESA. THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA DOES HEREBY RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: THAT, WHEREAS, it is in the public interest to encourage the cultural exchange between citizens of the City of Costa Mesa and persons in foreign lands; and WHEREAS, such cultural exchange broadens the knowledge of the peoples of the world; and WHEREAS, said cultural exchanges encourage world peace and under- standing; and WHEREAS, said cultural exchanges should include, among other things, the exchange of students, businessmen, gifts, art works, corres- pondence, and all other aspects and facets of the culture of each city; and WHEREAS, service clubs having the cultural exchange with cities in foreign countries should be supported in this endeavor; and WHEREAS, the hand of friendship extended to the City of Mitaka, Japan, from the City of Costa Mesa will be of mutual benefit to the citizens of each city; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED as follows: THAT, the City of Costa Mesa enter into negotiations with the City of Mitaka, Japan, to the end that a sister city relationship may be established between the two cities; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City of Costa Mesa cooperate to the extent allowed by law with the Orange Coast Optimist Club in their cultural exchange programs in keeping with the purposes of this Resolution; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution, inviting the undertaking of negotiations with the City of Mitaka, Japan, be forwarded under official seal of the City of Costa Mesa to the Mayor of Mitaka, Japan, inviting the City of Mitaka, Japan, to participate in the Sister City Program and to adopt the City of Costa Mesa as its sister city in the United States; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be forwarded to officers of the Orange Coast Optimist Club; BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution, duly exe- cuted by the Mayor and Clerk under the official seal of the City of Costa Mesa, be made a part of the permanent records and be filed in the archives of the City of Costa Mesa.
