HomeMy WebLinkAbout76-15 - Requesting Name Change of Newport Freeway to Costa Mesa FreewayRESOLUTION NO. 76-15 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA PETITIONING THE LEGISLATURE FOR THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA TO RENAME THE NEWPORT FREE- WAY FROM ITS INCEPTION TO ITS TERMINUS TO THE COSTA MESA FREEWAY AND STATING REASONS THEREFOR. THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA DOES HEREBY RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: THAT, WHEREAS, Route 55 Freeway from Route 91, being the Riverside Freeway to its proposed terminus at or near 15th Street at the south boundary of the City of Costa Mesa is designated officially as the Newport Freeway; and WHEREAS, it is the general practice of freeway routes to be named for the City where said routes terminate; and WHEREAS, said freeway route presently terminates at the south boundary of the City of Costa Mesa at or near the intersection of a projection of 15th Street and Superior Avenue; and WHEREAS, there are no plans to construct said freeway further in a southerly direction to join with the Pacific Coast Highway; and WHEREAS, the City of Costa Mesa has vigorously and continuously supported the California Department of Transportation in its freeway plans and proposals on said Route 55; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Costa Mesa, through its designated representatives, Assemblyman Burke and Senator Carpenter, respectfully petition the California Legislature to change the name of the aforesaid route from Newport Freeway to Costa Mesa Freeway; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution in certified form be forwarded to each of aforesaid Legislators with the request that they institute the necessary legislative action to accomplish its purposes; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution in certified form be forwarded to the California Department of Transportation, Attention: Chairman California Highway Commission, with a cover letter requesting their support and approval of the purposes as stated herein; BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution in certified form be forwarded to Division 7 of the California Department of Trans- portation in Los Angeles, with a cover letter requesting their support and approval for the purposes as set forth herein.
