HomeMy WebLinkAbout76-32 - Opposing Proposed Legislation for Diversion of Motor Vehicle Fuel TaxesRESOLUTION NO. 76-32 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA, OPPOSING THE PRO- POSED BALLOT MEASURE PERTAINING TO THE DIVERSION OF MOTOR VEHICLE FUEL TAXES FOR FIXED GUIDEWAY PURPOSES, AND GIVING REASONS THEREFOR. THAT, WHEREAS, certain provisions of Article 26 of the Constitu- tion of the State of California allow for the diversion of motor vehicle fuel taxes for fixed guideway purposes; and WHEREAS, said diversion of motor vehicle fuel tax monies can only be authorized by voter approval; and WHEREAS, the Orange County Transit District is in the process of placing such a measure on the June, 1976, ballot; and WHEREAS, approval of said measure will reduce the already insuffi- cient funds available for maintenance of City, County, and State highways; and WHEREAS, the allocation of motor vehicle fuel taxes for fixed guideway purposes may cause a concurrent reduction in the amount of funds available for future construction projects financed by the Orange County Arterial Highway Financing Program; and WHEREAS, the amount of revenue diverted to fixed guideway develop- ment will have only a minor impact on the ultimate funding needs of public transit; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Costa Mesa opposes any diversion of motor vehicle fuel taxes for fixed guideway purposes. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be forwarded to the Orange County Board of Supervisors and the Orange County Transit District. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be forwarded to all of the cities in Orange County with a request that similar resolutions be adopted.
