A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA, REQUESTING LEGISLATION
WHICH WOULD REQUIRE UTILITY COMPANIES TO MARK
POWER LINES THAT COULD BE HAZARDOUS TO AIR
TRAVEL.
WHEREAS, there is considerable aviation activity in Orange County '
generated from its own Orange County Airport, as well as E1 Toro Marine
Air Corps Air Station, Santa Ana Marine Air Corps - Helicopter - Air
Station, Fullerton Airport, San Juan Capistrano Airport, and numerous
helicopter flights originating from law enforcement agencies which are
subject daily to power line hazards; and
WHEREAS, over the years there have been several fatal accidents
caused by aircraft striking power and telephone lines in Orange County
resulting in the loss of several lives; and
WHEREAS, these power lines must exist and will continue to exist
due to the nature of our civilization and, in fact, additional power and
telephone lines will doubtless be built in the future;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of
Costa Mesa that the Southern California Edison Company, Pacific Tele-
phone Company, and any other agencies which construct and operate such
lines are hereby requested to install appropriate visual markings on all
such lines which pose operational flight hazards to aviators and their
aircraft, including, but not limited to, lines that cross over (1) crests
of hills or mountains, (2) lines that cross canyons or ravines, (3) lines
that cross over rivers or other bodies of water, and (4) lines that are
an unusual or exceptional height above the terrain or stretch for an i
exceptional length between towers. J
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is hereby instructed to
forward this request to the appropriate agencies.
