RESOLUTION NO. 77-50
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA, URGING THE STATE LEGIS-
LATURE TO RETURN FROM 16-2/3 PERCENT TO 20
PERCENT OF THE SHARE OF STATE SALES AND USE TAX
REVENUES DISTRIBUTED TO CITIES.
WHEREAS, the State of California in 1974 increased the State sales
and use tax from five cents to six cents; and
WHEREAS, cities' shares of the State sales and use tax remain at
one cent, thus reducing from 20 percent to 16-2/3 percent their relative
share of the sales tax revenues; and
WHEREAS, cities have increasingly found themselves with shortages
of general fund revenues; and
WHEREAS, the State has continued to impose mandated costs upon
cities, thus even further reducing available general fund revenues;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of
Costa Mesa urges the State Legislature to pass legislation providing
that the share of State sales and use tax revenues distributed to cities
be returned from 16-2/3 percent to 20 percent.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this Resolution be forwarded
to the State Legislators for Costa Mesa, all Orange County cities, and
the Orange County Division of the League of California Cities.
PASSED AND ADOPTED this 18th day of April, 1977.
