A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA, ON THE OCCASION OF THE
RETIREMENT OF ARVO HOPPA OF THE NEWPORT HARBOR
ENSIGN NEWSPAPER.
WHEREAS, it is rumored that Mr. Hoppa bartered a "Bill Sez Column"
about what the City was doing wrong for an unidentified number of cut
rate haircuts; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Hoppa, until the date of sale of the paper, ran a
Costa Mesa Harper Column, concerning all things bright and beautiful in
Costa Mesa, even when they were; and
WHEREAS, he continually ran the Costa Mesa Police Blotter, op-
posite the Church News, in a gallant but losing effort to diminish
crime, or to attempt to convert the fallen into the chosen few; and
WHEREAS, it is rumored that Mr. Hoppa actually accepted money for
the privilege of running the Al Forgit ad, which produced the least
understood and highest head scratching ratio in both Costa Mesa and
Newport Beach; and
WHEREAS, it was apparent that the wages of crime were far higher
in Newport Beach than in Costa Mesa when direct comparisons were made
with each police report;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that in any event the news was
interesting, if not accurate, the reporting colorful, if not complete,
and in every sense of the word "Journalism", was at the very least given
a good go, and it is therefore the intent of the City Council of the
City of Costa Mesa to wish Mr. Hoppa Godspeed and a joyful and long
deserved retirement.
PASSED AND ADOPTED this 6th day of February, 1978.
