HomeMy WebLinkAbout87-67 - Automobile Club of Southern California Freeway ProposalRESOLUTION NO. 87-67 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA, RMARDING A FREEWAY DEVELOPMENT PROPOSAL TO THE YEAR 2000 FROM THE KHOMOBILE CLUB OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. VHEREAS, the lifestyle and economy of Southern California arra Orange County are based largely upon mobility made possible by our highway and freeway networks; and WHEREAS, Southern California's population is expected to increase by at least 3 million, to approximately 19 million residents by the year 2000, and Orange County's population is expected to increase fran 2.2 million to 2.7 million during the sane time period; and WHEREAS, the number of daily trips in Southern California will increase frau 50 million to 65 million, and in Orange County frau 7 million to aver 10 million by the year 2000; and MEREAS, the freeway system will continue to serve over 50 percent of Orange County travelers to and beyond the year 2000; arra 6HEREAS, mobility in Orange County is jeopardized as congestion of our streets, highways, and freeways continues to worsen; and WHEREAS, the Orange County freeway and arterial highway system expan- sion needs are well documented and urgently needed; and WHEREAS, improved efficiency of existing freeways and highways must be achieved through improved traffic management techniques; and WHEREAS, public transit services must be correspondingly improved; and WHEREAS, through its Freeway Development Proposal to the year 2000, the Automobile Club of Southern California has undertaken the promotion of public action toward addressing the transportation needs of Southern Cali- fornia and Orange County; NOW, THEREFORE, EE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Costa Mesa supports the Automobile Club of Southern California proposal to pranote public awareness of the need for freeway and arterial highway system improvements by constructing new routes and expansion of existing routes, pranoting freeway and arterial flow management programs, promoting related freeway arra arterial operational improvements, encouraging corres- ponding transit service improvements, and by calling for adequate revenues for such system improvements. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be transmitted to Governor George Deukmejian, Senate President Pro Tempore David Roberti, and Assembly Speaker Willie Brown.
