Job No. F64-105 August 10, 1964 FOUNDATION INVESTIGATION Proposed industrial building for Mr. Roy Daniels Grace Lane, on the south side and adjacent to the Adohr Plant Costa Mesa, California Introduction This report presents the results of a foundation investigation for the proposed industrial building loacted as described above. Based on information provided by Mr. Reagan , the building will have a concrete floor slab with pre-cast tilt-up concrete walls which will be supported by either continuous footings or isolated square pads at each end of the wall sections. Maximum column loads will be on the order of 50 kips D plus L. The object of this investigation was to determine the char- acter and distribution of earth materials at the site as well as the condition of a small amount of existing fill, and to provide for a safe and structurally adequate foundation design. Exploration The scope of the field investigation was limited to hand excavations and power auger borings and extreme difficulty was encountered in penetrating beyond 5 feet due to the cemented condition of the natural ground and the amount of lime con- cretions present. Satisfactory sub-soil information was obtained however, by virtue of the fact that our firm has conducted a number of soils studies in the immediate vicinity and the type of pertinent soil formation present was identified as a portion i..i3AULT & IIAMMOND • &Z.91ILEtting • . • . Top soil was limited to a thin layer of alluvium which increases in depth moving northward. Representative samples were obtained from the pertinent foundation soils by means of a 2.5 inch I.D. thin wall sampler. • Testing Field and laboratory testing consisted of the following: A. Classification Tests Moisture content and density were determined on all undis- turbed samples. Classification of the material as to size was made by careful visual examination of the excavations made on the site. B. Strength' Tests Soil strength was determined from laboratory direct shear tests performed on saturated 2 .5 inch diameter samples . Porous stones placed at the top and bottom of each undisturbed soil specimen, permit the free flow of water into or from the soil during the test. Successive load increments were applied to the top of the specimen and progressive and final settlement under each increment was measured to an accuracy of .0001 inch. The final settlement so obtained is plotted to deter- mine the curve shown on Figure I. Earth Materials The subject site is situated on a high plateau of uplifted pre-consolidated sediments of Pleistocene age. A very thin soil mantle of clay was present•- which had been mostly scraped from the site during some current light grading operations. The typical native soil below a depth of 6 inches consists of a light brown tan colored mixture of very sandy silt, clayey silt, and sandy clay interbedded with thin lime seams and lime concretions. These soils ' are well consolidated due to heavy surcharge loads from overburdened soils which were formerly on top of them. Moisture content increased somewhat with depth, however no water table was encountered to a depth of 10 feet in an adjacent boring and is not expected for some depth below this . Foundation Recommendations Spread Footings Rased on the results of direct shear tests an angle of internal friction of 35° with 100 p. s .f. available cohesion was determined for the pertinent foundation soils. For square footings at least 3 feet wide , an allowable soil bearing pressure of 3000 p. s .f. may be. used. A settlement analysis was performed using a 50 kip column load and 3000 p. s.f. soil bearing pressure which indicated 1.5 inches of total settlement. After a supervised grading operation where the natural ground will be compacted and subsequent fills placed and compacted under our supervision, post-construction differential settlement will be on the order of-1/2 inc or less which should be within design tolerances . Grading Recommendations A limited amount of fill has been placed on the subject site and it has a maximum depth of about 1 foot. CIVIL ENGINEER Job No. F64-105 -5- August 10, 1964 recommended that a controlled grading operation be performed wherein the natural -r in the building area he scarified, watered, mixed , and compacted to a minimum of 90% in the upper 12 inches and all subsequen be approved for stability by the soils engineer and be similarly compacted to a minimum of 90% relative compaction, preferably by sheepsfoot rolling. These fill soils should be evenly bladed in approximately 6 inch lifts , and watered to near optimum moisture, then properly compacted . An expansion test performed on the native sediments indicated 1.0% expansion which is not sufficient to provide any problem to the proposed foundations , however it is important that fill soils be also of a reasonably non-expansive nature.and that positive drainageaway from the building be maintained so that seasonal volume change of the soils will be limited and not cause stress to the foundations , especially the floor slab . Some of the top fill material which is on the site is of an expansive nature and would serve better in the parking areas . If it is not possible to eliminate the majority of these expansive fill soils from the building area , it is recommended that 66/1010 wire mesh be employed in the floor slab which is also a wise precautionary measure if concentrated loads are to be placed on the slab. It is our understanding that heavy wheel loads will be involved on the paved area around the proposed building due to the use of fork-lift trucks as well as large transport-type trucks . In order to provide a satisfactory base for these paved areas the following recommendations are presented . All of these compaction tests should be based on the commonly accepted maximum density determination A. A. S. H. O. Standard test method T180-57 (25 blows on each of 3 layers with a 10 lb. hammer falling 18 inches in a mold of 1/30 cu. ft. volume ) . The controlling building authorities require that all grading and fill placement be performed under the supervision and control of a licensed soils testing agency.
