HomeMy WebLinkAbout11-08 - Proclaiming the City Encourages Local Businesses to Hire Costa Mesa YouthRESOLUTION NO. 11-8 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA, PROCLAIMING THE CITY OF COSTA ENCOURAGES LOCAL BUSINESSES TO HIRE COSTA MESA YOUTH. THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA HEREBY RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS: WHEREAS, the national unemployment rate for youth (ages 16-19 years old) in December 2010 was 25.4%. The community must embrace this large share of our City's future human capital. We must build workplace skills essential to the economic future of our youth and our economy's ability to create the very jobs that generate wealth and opportunity for all City residents. WHEREAS, second only to a higher education as a correlate for earnings prosperity is early, positive work experience. There is a high correlation between early exposure to work and an increased likelihood of staying in school and continuing through higher education. WHEREAS, to ensure the City's youth are given every opportunity to continue to participate in constructive activities, the City should make every effort to facilitate youth development. We must encourage youth to secure and maintain meaningful employment ,and that employment and the lessons learned from work are critical for youths' positive development. WHEREAS, the City and business should act together to prevent youth and families from entering into the criminal justice system through engagement and partnership with broad sectors of the community, and to provide comprehensive, neighborhood -based strategies for effective coordination and sharing of city, community health, human resources, services and information. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the. City of Costa Mesa encourages local business within the City of Costa Mesa to hire its local youth to ensure that the City's youth are provided with every opportunity to participate in the constructive and enriching activities of the work force.
