A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA, SUPPORTING THE
DISPLAY OF THE UNITED STATES FLAG ON "FREEDOM
DAYS."
WHEREAS, the United States Flag is a symbol of national unity, national
endeavor, and national aspiration; and
WHEREAS, the United States Flag means America first, an undivided
allegiance, and freedom; and
WHEREAS, the United States Flag represents patriotism and sacrifice—that
one cannot be saved by the valor and devotion to one's ancestors, but to each
generation comes a patriotic duty to the United States; and
WHEREAS, the United States Flag, also known as "Old Glory," speaks of
the sacrifice of many brave men and women in the history of the United States for
the good of its people; and
WHEREAS, the display of "Old Glory" in observance of those, who have
sacrificed and endured kindles the freedom, hope, and spirit of future generations
to sacrifice and endure for the ideals on which America was founded; and
WHEREAS, these important dates of freedom include Banner Day, March 3;
Memorial Day at the end of May, observed and traditional days; Flag Day, June
14; City Incorporation Day, June 29; Independence Day, July 4; Labor Day, first
Monday in September; Constitution Day, September 17; and Veterans Day, mid-
November, observed and traditional days.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of
Costa Mesa declares its support to commemorate these important dates of
freedom by displaying the United States Flag, and encourages Costa Mesa citizens
to fly "Old Glory" as well.
PASSED AND ADOPTED this 19th day of March, 2001.
