Korczak 1722 New Hampshire Drive Costa Mesa, California Dear Sir: When the residence at the above address was built, there was no requirement for a pressure and temperature relief valve on a water heater. Very few existing houses have such valves and the danger has, in the past, been considered rather remote for such a valve to be plugged or not installed. Recently, however, relief valves are being required by more and more jurisdictions and will be required here in Costa Mesa in the very near future, as an added safety precaution, even though there are already two safety devices on the heater, and the pipe to the water main is normally not equipped with a check valve, so that excessive pressure will be relieved when the water expands back toward the main. These particular valves were installed after the Building Depart- ment had inspected and approved the plumbing. They were installed be- dense of F.H.A. requirements, we believe. The piping away from the valve is intended only to convey a small . amount of hot water to a relatively safe disposal point.
