SubjecC Permatek Shakes and Cemwootl Shakes. I I. Description: A. Ge neral: The shakes are composed of two and three- founhs parts portland cement, one partwood fiberand one-fourth part in- orqanic additives. The resulting product has the capability of being nailed ad sawn similar to wood. Colors are obtained with mineral oxitle pigments in acrylic paints. 1. Permatek Shakes: The Permatek shake is 14 inches wide and 15 in- ches long with a simulated hand-split cedar shake pattern on the lower 12 inches of the butt end. The transverse cross section o(the shake consists ol four ribs, each approximately 1 inch witle maximum. The ribs are spaced approximately 23/0, 3 and 4 inches apart and run 11 inches along the length o1 the shake. The interlocking side lap between adjacent shakes is 1 Y2 inches wide and is designed to restrict lateral movement antl pro- vide positive water channeling. The shakes weigh approximately 4'/2 pounds per square foot when installed with a 3-inch headlap. See Figure No. 1. 2. Cemwood Shakes: TheCemwood shakes are 72, 7 and 5 incheswide ad 22'/2 inches long with a simulated wood shake exposure detail on the lower 11 inches of the butt end. Nominal thickness varies irom V, inch at one end to 1 inch at the butl end. The installed weight of the shake is ap- proximately 5.8 pounds per square foot when installed with a 10-inch ex- posure. See Figures Nos. 6 antl 7. B. Installation: New Construction: 1. General: a. Permatek Shakes: Permatek shakes musi be installed with vertical joints offsei 4 inches mini- mum and horizonial joints parallel to the eave. See Figure No. 2. Shakes must be cut ro match the angle o(the valleys or hips and still maintain the integrity of each unii. Foreign particles must be cleaned from all interlock- ing areas to ensure correct fit and interlock and to prevent water damming. Cracketl or broken shakes must not be installed nor allowed to remain on the root. The shakes are tor installation on roois wiih a minimum slope of 4:12 and must be applietl over solitl sheathing with untlerlayment as notetl in paragraph II B-3. b. Cemwood Shakes: Cemwood shakes must 6e doubled at the eave line with a 14-inch-long shake used as a starter course. See Figure No. 9. For the remainder of the courses, the side spacing shall be similar to that requiretl for wood shakes, as described in Chapter 32 of the code. 2. Sheathing: a. Permatek Shakes: Solitl sheathing consists of nominal 1-inch lumber or minimum /z inch-thick plywood. Sheathing must be structurally adequate to support the loatls involved and must be nailed in accortlance with the code. Cemwood Shakes: Both solid and spaced sheathing may be used in acwrdance with Chapter 32 of the code. � 3. Underlayment: a. Permatek Shakes: An underlayment is always re- quired and must consist ot one of the following: (i) Class A Root Covering: The shakes are applied over solid sheathing, and an undedayment ot listed 72-pound mineral-surfacetl fiberglass cap sheet must be installed overthe Class B undedaymeni prior to installation ofthe shakes. (ii) Class B Roof Covering: The shakes are applied over solitl sheathinq and an underlayment of Type 30 organic fiber felt must be installed prior to installation ot the shakes. In areas subject to ice and snow buildup, blowing dust or sand, or where eztreme high wind-rain conditions (hurri- cane) occur, installation must comply v�ith Section 3208 (b)10 of the Uni- form Building Cotle. b. Cemwood Shakes: Installation shall be as prescribed below: (i) Under 3:12 Raol Pitch: The Cemwood shakes are not designed for root slopes less than 3:12. They may be used for dewrative purposes on these pitches, providetl a complete huilt-up roofing system is installed in accortlance with Chapter 32 and the assembly is specifically approved by the local building official. (ii) 3:12 to 4:12 Roof Pitch: The Cemwood shakes may be installed at this slope on solid sheathing with aType 15 fell underlayment with the ap- proval of the local building official. A Type 30 felt interlayment must also be used as described in Section II B-3 b(2). (iii) 4:12 to 12:12 Roof Pitch: The Cemwood shakes may be installed on spaced or solid sheathing with minimum 18-inch-wide Type 30 felt in- terlayetl between shakes so that no felt is exposed directly to ihe weather. See Figures Nos. 10 through 13 for further details. (iv) Greater than 12:12 Roaf Pitch: The Cemwood shakes may be in- stalled on spaced or solid sheathing with felt installed as set forth in Item iii above. For mansard roof applications, flashing is required at the top of the mansard sections. 4. Ftashing: Valley flashing must be minimum No. 28 gauge corrosion- resistant metal exlendinq at least 17 inches from the valley center line each way and must have a splash diverter rib not less ihan 1 inch high at the flow line formetl as part ot ihe flashing. Flashing must have an end lap of not less than 4 inches. See Figure No. 3. 5. Shake Fastening: a. Permatek Shakes: Th ree fasteners per shake are used and must be a minimum No. 11 gauge corrosion-resistant box nail driven through the headlap approximately 1'/Z inches below the top edge. Each fastener must penetrate a rib on the underside of the shake antl have sufficient length to penetrate 3/, inch into the sheathing or through ihe lhickness of the sheathing, whichever is less. Care must be laken to drive ihe nail flush with the surtace of the shake without damaging ihe material. b. Cemwood Shakes: Each shake, including hip and ridge shakes, shall be fastenetl to the roof by two nails of not less than No.13 gauge with cor- rosion-resistant coating or minimum'/,6-inch crown, 2-inch-long, No.16 gauge galvanized staples. See Fig- ures Nos. 10 through 131or turiher details. Care must be taken to drive the fastener tlush with the surtace ot the shake without damaging the ma- terial. 6. Hips, Ridges and Rakes: a. Permatek Shakes: Hip and ridge shakes can be installetl with orwithout ritlge boards. They are nailed with two No. 11 gauge corrosion-resistant box nails driven into the hip antl ridge fram- ing members. The two longitudinal edges of hip and ritlge shakes are em- betlded in portland cement mortar or by an alternative method acceptable to the Iocai builtling ofiicial for weatherresisiive purposes. See Figure No. 4. Rake shakes are to be used on all exposed gable-end applications and cut to show solitl profile to weathec Rake shakes must be fastened with two fasteners as noted above. See Figure No. 5. b. Cemwood Shakes: Hip and ridge units are supplied as two 6-inch by 22YZ-inch shakes beveled, glued and nailetl to conform to the exact roof pitch. See Figure No. 8. Also, the one-piece Permatek hip and ridge may be used. 7. Roof Covering Classification: a. Permatek Shakes: Permatek shakes, instailetl in accordance wilh this report, are recognized as either a Class A or Class B rooi covering untler Section 3204 (a) of ihe code. The required rooi deck and underlayment forthe specified classification must comply with paragraph II B-3. b. Cemwood Shakes: A Class A roofing system with Cemwood shakes can be recognized with Type 30 saturatetl organic felt interlayment in- stalled as set forth in Figures Nos. 10 through 13 over solitl or spaced sheathing. C. Installation: Rerooting Applications: 1. General: a. Permatek Shakes: Structural tlata indicating thatthe existing or modified roof-fram- ing system is adequate to supportthe additional Permatek shake roof cov- ering must be fumished to the building official for approval. Details for roofing installation not covered under this section are to be as specifietl above for new construction. The existing roof must be inspected as set forth in Chapter 32 oi the 1988 Uniform 8uilding Cotle Appendix. b. Cemwood Shakes: Where the existing roof is relatively smooth and uniform such as composition orwood shingles, and if the existing framing will support the increasetl load, the Cemwood shake roof may be applietl overthe existing roofing system as settorth in Section II B above for Cem- Report No. 4312 wood shakes. Pordecorative purposes, an "L" metal strip is installed over the existing rooi along the eave line and similariy along the rake line. 2. Oeck Preparation: a. Asphalt Shingie: Deck su�face is to be swept clean and underlayment applied as noted in paragraph II B-3. b. Wood Shake and Shingle Roofs: Existing wood roof must be re- moved to expose the sheathing and underlayment applied as noted in paragraph II 83 except as noted in Section II C-t b. 3. Eaue Preparation: Existing roof material must be cut back to allow for installation of a raised fascia board or cani strip. D.1990 Accumutative Supplement to ihe U.B.C.: This report is unaf- fected by the Supplement. E. Identification: The name Permatek is embossed on the underside ot each Permatek shake. The capital letters "A/C" are embossed on each Cemwood shake. Adtlitionally, each shipping pallet is identifietl by a tag comaining the manufacturer's name and address, product name, the eval- uation report number antl the name of the inspection agency, Ramtech Laboratories, Inc. (NER-�A293). III. Evidence Suhmitted: Reports of tests in accordance with the ICBO Evaluation Service, Inc., Acceptance Criteria for Special Roofing Systems, datetl January, 1990 with amendments dated, April, 1990. Findings IV. Findings: Thal the Permatek Shakes and Cemwood Shakes de- scribed in this reporl comply with the 1988 Uniform Building Cade, sub- ject to ihe fallawing conditions: 7. That the shakes are manufactured, identitied and installed in ac- cordance with ihis repmt and the manutacturer's instructions. 2.
