Dear Mr. Rossman:
This letter is to clarify our letter to you dated October
6, 1976. In this letter it was certified that, by field
inspection, the rough plumbing work in the party walls of
the apartsnent project at 2437 Elden in the City of Costa
Mesa correctly incorporated the noise reduction measures
recommended in our report 76/616.
Please be advised that the above inspection (which was
passed) was requested by the City of Costa Mesa to assure
that the installation of the rough plumbing would not com-
promise the provisions or intent of the California Noise
Insulation Standards*, Article 4, Section 1092. This sec-
tion describes sound transmission control between dwelling
units, and establishes acceptable criteria.

Subject: Acoustical Plumbing Recommendations for Duplexes
at 2437 Elden in the City of Costa Mesa

Dear Mr. Rossman:
As requested, we have inspected your plans for acoustical
plumbing details in the duplex units at 2437 Elden in the
City of Costa Mesa.
The location of plumbing in a party wall or floor-ceiling
assembly can degrade the acoustical construction. In order
to prevent plumbing noise from being transmitted from one
unit to another, for conditions where the plumbing must be
in the party wall, .the following details should be observed:
/
1. All hot and cold water pipes must be isolated from the
building frame by 1/4-inch thick collars of felt, car-
pet, or equivalent soft material (see attached diagrams).
2. One recommended product is the Nieco Pipe Isolator
which consists of 1/4-inch thick £elt, 2-1/4 inches
wide, which is adhesively attached to a soft
aluminum strip. The material is supplied in rolls
and distributed by Everett Sales Company in Los
Angeles. In use, a piece is cut from the roll, wrapped
around a pipe, and nailed to the structural member(s).
3. The cavity surrounding the pipes should be filled with
open-faced fiberglass (or mineral wool), or sprayed
with an adhesive cellulose product (e.g., Celbar,
Thermacon, etc.).

4. Openings in the dry wall around a fixture feed line
should be cut oversize to accommodate a 1/4-inch bead
of caulking around the feed line, thereby isolating
the pipe £rom the wall.
5. For £loor-ceiling assemblies, and waste line penetrations
of non-common walls, waste lines above the slab preferably
should be cast iron. Also, the elbow should be isolated
from the position blocks with carpet padding or a felt
material.
If these recommendations are carefully followed, the plumbing
in the interior of the party walls will be in compliance with
the noise standards of the City of Costa Mesa.
If we can provide further assistance concerning this matter,
