All sleeping rooms in dweiling units below the fourth floor shall have at least one operable window or door approved for
emergency escape or re5cue. The emergency window or door shall be operable from the insfde to provide a full, clear
opening without the use of separate tools. Escape or rescue windows shall have a minimum net clear openable area of
5.7 square feet. The minimum net clear height dime�sion shall be 24 inches. The minimum net clear width dimension
shall be 20 (nches. When windows are provided as a means of esope or rescue, they shall have a finished sill height not
more than 44 inches above the floor. �`

310.6 Room Dimensions.
310.6.1 Ceiling heighLt. Habitable space shall have a ceiling
height of noi less than 7 feet 6 inches (2286 mm) except as other-
wise permitted in this secuon. �tchens. halls, bathrooms and toi-
let companments may have a ceiling height of na less t an feet
(2134 mm) measured to the loWest projection hom t e cei mg.
Where exposed beam ceiling members are spaced at less than
48 inches (1219 mm) on anter, ceiling height shall be meuured
�o the boitom of these membets. Where exposed beam ceiling
members are spaced at 48 inches (1319 mm) or more on cemer,
ceifing height shall be meazured to the bottom of the deck sup-
ported by these members, providcd that the bottom oC the mem-
bers is not less than 7(eet (213d mm) above the floot.
If any room in a building haz a slaping ceiling, the prescribed
Ceiling heigM [or thc room is required in only one half the area
thereof. No portion of the room measuring kss than 5 feet (1524
mm) from the fnished floor to the finished ceiling shall be in-

310.9.1.3
If any room has a funed ceiling, the prescribed ceiling hcight is
required in two thirds the arw thercof, but in no case shall the
height o( the furted ceiling be less than 7 feet (2134 mm).

310.63 Wid[h. Habitable moms other than a kitchen shall noi
be less than 7 feet ("�134 mm) in any dimension.
310.7 Efticiency Dwelling Units. An efficiency dwelling unit
shall con(orm to the rcquirements of the code except as herein
provided:
1. The unit shall have a livin� room o( not less than 220 square
feet (20.4 m'-) of supe�cial (loor area. An additional 1�6sauare
feet (9.3 m'-) of supe�cial floor area shall be provided for each
occuDant of such unit in ezcess ot two.
2. The unic shalf be pmvided wi[h a separate closet.
3. The unit shall be provided with a kitchen sink, eooking
appliance and refrieeration facilitir�. each Laving a clear working
space of not less than 30 inches (76? mm) in front. Lieht and ven-
tila[ion conformin� to this code shall be provided.
4. The unit shall be provided with a separate bathroom contain-
ing a waeer closet. lacaton� and bathtub or shower.
310.8 Shaft and Er.it Enclosures. Exits shall be enclosed as
specified in Chapter 10.
Elevator shafrs. �en[ shafis. dumbw�airer shafu. clothes chutes
and other vertical openings shall be enclosed and [he enclosure
shall be as specified in Section 711.
In nonsprinklered Group R. Division 1 Occupancies, comdors
serving an occupant load of 10 or more shall be separated from
corridors and other areas on adjacent floors by not less [han ap-
proved fixed wired glass set in steel frames or by ?0-minute
smoke- and draft-con[rol zssemblies, which are automatic clos-
ing by smoke de[ection. �
310.9 Smoke Detectors and Sprinl:ler Systems.
310.9.1 Smoke detectors.
310.9.1.1 General. Dwelling units, coneregate residences and
hotel or lodeing house gues� rooms that are used for sleeping pur-
poses shall be provided with smoke deteaors. Detectors shall be
installed in aewrdance with the approved manufacturer's instruc-
tions.
310.9.1.2 Addi[ions, al[erations or repairs to Group R Occu-
pancies. When the valuation of an addition, alteration or repair
to a Group R Occupancy exceeds 51.000 and a permit is�required,
or when one or more sleeping rooms are added or aeated in ezist-
ing Group R Occupancies, smoke detectors shall be installed in
accordance with Sections 310.9.1.3, 310.9.1.4 and 310.9.1.? of
this section.

310.9.1� Power souree. In now construction, required smoke
detectors shall reccive their primary power fram the building wir-

without a disconneaing switch ather than thosc required for over-
