Dear Mr. Kumer:
This office has been advised through a Correction Notice issued
by your inspector, Mr. B. McGeough, that in his opinion checking
in a beam in the garage of the above -referenced property "appears
to be excessive," and that "it probably needs to be engineered."
This is not our first notice of this situation, and perhaps a
brief recount of past events is in order.
We were made aware of beam checking in doing a service "walk-
through" on November 21, 1978. At that time, direction was
given to our framing foreman to investigate the situation. In
the subsequent investigation, the lumber supplier was called into
the matter since the structural integrity of the beam was being
questioned. As is customary in these cases, the lumber supplier
had the beam inspected by a qualified lumber grader from the West
Coast Lumber Inspection Bureau. The results of that inspection
are enclosed.
It should also be noted that there was no evidence in the areas
of the structure being carried by the beam to indicate that it
was not performing as it was designed. At this time, this office
felt secure that the problem was one of aesthetics, not structural
integrity, and offered to fill the checks and paint the otherwise
unfinished beam.

It is my opinion that this beam does not have to be engineered
since it already has been, and appropriate calculations
submitted to you at the time of plan check called for an 8" by
14" $1 Douglas Fir timber to carry the assigned loads.
The determination of the proper performance of a structural
member such as this is twofold: first, if there is evidence
that the loads are not being carried properly, the situation
does call for a structural engineering analysis; secondly, if
the nature or quality of the timber is in question, the proper.
investigating entity is a certified lumber grader.
I do not know if Mr. McGeough was aware of these events prior
to issuing the enclosed Correction Notice; however, I feel that
the steps taken to date by Foley Construction Co., Incorporated,
have been prudent and we remain eager to cosmetically treat the
beam.
Please contact me at your earliest convenience on this matter.
