HomeMy WebLinkAbout07-81 - Support of Acquiring Real Property at 2651 Newport Blvd (Air National Guard Property)RESOLUTION NO. 07-81 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA, IN SUPPORT OF ACQUIRING REAL PROPERTY AT 2651 NEWPORT BOULEVARD, COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA, ALSO KNOWN AS THE CALIFORNIA AIR NATIONAL GUARD (ANG)PROPERTY. THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA HEREBY RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS: WHEREAS, on March 31, 2008, the Air National Guard (ANG) will close its Costa Mesa unit at 2651 Newport Boulevard, Costa Mesa, and transfer to Beale Air Force Base in Marysville, California; and WHEREAS, the Department of Defense is now in the process of notifying other Department of Defense agencies regarding interest in the property and should there be none, then notice will be given by the Federal General Services Agency to other federal agencies, and then state, county and local agencies; and WHEREAS, the City of Costa Mesa is a city of over 113,000 residents and is currently deficient in public open space and parkland by approximately 50 acres; and. WHEREAS, the City of Costa Mesa has a strong interest in securing this 7.86 - acre property for open space and parkland purposes, historic preservation of ANG items, and as a natural extension of TeWinkle Park; and WHEREAS, the ANG property is zoned Institutional and Recreational (18R), with a compatible general plan designation of Public and Institutional, which would be consistent with a park and/or public use of the property; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Costa Mesa, California, does hereby resolve to support acquiring the Air National Guard property for the betterment of the community, to provide much needed parkland and open space, and preserve Air National Guard and City history. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Costa Mesa urges the General Services Agency, our local Congress Member, and others to favorably consider and support the City's serious interest in the property for the purposes as stated herewith.
