AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
COSTA MESA MAKING PROVISIONS FOR THE DESTRUCTION
OF CITY RECORDS; PROVIDING FOR APPROVAL OF SPEC-
IFIC RECORDS BY RESOLUTION; PROVIDING FOR THE
SPECIFIC APPROVAL OF APPROPRIATE CITY PERSONNEL
THEREFOR.
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA DOES HEREBY
ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1: The City Council of the City of Costa Mesa
finds and declares that 534090, §34090.5, §34090.7 and §53921 of
the California Government -Code make provision for the destruction
of public records. The City Council further finds and declares
that since the incorporation of the City in June of 1953 the
archives of the City have continuously and steadily accumulated
paper records. The City Council further finds and declares
that many of the records so accumulated are duplicates and are
obsolete and .of no legal effect and are without historical or
other value. The City Council further finds and declares that
the interest of conservation of space, the saving of employee
time and the economy of government require the destruction of
certain obsolete records which are no longer necessary for the
functions of government. The City Council further finds and
declares that applicable law requires that certain records be
preserved and that other records may be destroyed with the
approval of the City Attorney. The City Council further finds
and declares that it is desirable for the reasons set forth herein
to establish a procedure for the destruction of said records..
Accordingly, §2-10 of Title 2, Chapter I is hereby
adopted as follows:
SECTION 2: "§2-10 DESTRUCTION OF CITY RECORDS
Duplicate and obsolete records of the City of Costa Mesa
shall be destroyed by a means which will not allow them to be
readily restored or reconstituted, and under the following

§53921 California Government Code and other
applicable law.
(b)` After application for their destruction has been
approved by the City Attorney or his,duly author-
ized representative.
(c) Upon approval by Resolution of the City Council
after the aforesaid approval by the City Attorney
or his authorized representative has been granted."
SECTION 3: This ordinance shall take effect and be in
full force and effect thirty (30) days from and after its
passage and before the expiration of fifteen (15) days after its
passage, shall be published once in the Orange.Coast Daily Pilot,
a newspaper of general circulation printed and published in the
City of Costa Mesa, together with the names of the members of the
City Council, voting for and.against the same.
